Box Score 2 Kerrville, Texas - The top-ranked Tiger baseball team swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from Schreiner University on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers won the opening game 11-1, and took the second half of the twinbill 15-2. Trinity has won nine games in a row, and stands at 25-4 on the season, and 10-1 in conference play. The Mountaineers dropped to 6-22 and 1-10 SCAC. The two teams conclude their series Sunday with a single game at 2:00 p.m.
"In game one, we got a nice pitching performance from Dylan McGee," said Head Coach Tim Scannell. "He threw a very effective curve ball. We had some great at-bats by Pepe Santos and Jeremy Wolf. In game two, Santos came out swinging again, and Wolf had a big game as well. Today, we did a really good job of spreading out our hits. We hit them to all fields, and split the alleys, and we swung the bats well today."
Game one started out quietly, but the hot-hitting Tigers put up a run in the second inning, and three in the third, to take a 4-0 lead. Carter McEachern then pounded a two-RBI single in the fifth, to increase the Tigers advantage. The biggest inning for the Tigers was the four-run sixth, highlighted by two home runs. Drew Butler and Jose Santos each blasted a two-run homer. The home runs marked the fourth round-trippers this season for Butler and Santos.
Butler was flawless at the plate, going 3-3, with a double and three RBI, while crossing the plate three times. McEachern also batted 3-3, with two RBI and one run. Jeremy Wolf went 3-5 in the batter's box, with an RBI, a double, a triple, and two runs scored.
Dylan McGee (1-0) had his first start on the mound, and pitched for five innings. McGee struck out five batters in the process, while allowing three hits. David Coffman, T.J. Garhart, and Blake Frampton were the relief pitchers, and fanned six batters over four innings of work.
Game two began in a tighter fashion, as the score was tied at 2-2 after three innings. The Tigers blew the game open with a six-run fourth inning, as Santos cracked another two-run home run. Three more runs were in store for the Tigers in the seventh, sparked by a two-RBI double from George Haaland. The Tigers chalked up 22 hits in the second game.
Wolf had another stellar game, going 4-5, with two RBI and two runs scored. He batted 7-10 on the day, with three RBI and four runs. Santos hit 3-4 in game two, which included a double and four RBI. He was responsible for driving in six of the Tigers runs in the doubleheader.
Ryan Gray (5-3) had the nod on the mound, and pitched for five innings. Gray amassed eight strikeouts in the game, and gave up two hits, and two runs, none of them earned. Ian Hussian, Chris Tate, and Trevor Griffin permitted only three hits among them, and struck out six Mountaineers.
