Box Score Kerrville, Texas - The top-ranked Trinity baseball team was edged 2-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend finale at Schreiner University on Sunday.
"The story of the game is that we left 11 runners on base," admitted Head Coach Tim Scannell. "We just couldn't pump that timely hit. We hit a bunch of balls hard all day long, we just couldn't find a hole. They played well, the credit to Schreiner. Their kid pitched a good game, but we just couldn't come through with any timely hits."
Trinity had its nine-game winning streak snapped, and now stands at 25-5 on the season, and is sporting a 10-2 mark in conference play. The Tigers opened the weekend with a doubleheader sweep of the Mountaineers on Saturday. Schreiner upped its record to 7-22 and 2-10 SCAC after Sunday's win.
Connor Moore and Drew Butler strung together a couple of hits in the top of the third inning, and Jeremy Wolf drove Moore home to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. That would prove to be the last run of the day for Trinity, though, and Schreiner didn't waste much time before tying the game.
Following a one-out triple, Schreiner used a sacrifice fly to even the game at 1-1. In the seventh, the Mountaineers scored on a Tiger error to take the lead for good. Trinity had a runner on third with two outs in the eighth, but the Tigers were not able to bring home the tying score. Trinity also stranded a pair of runners in the ninth.
Moore, Butler, and Wolf all went 2-4 at the plate, and the Tigers piled up 10 total hits in the game. Teddy Turner worked for six innings as the Trinity starter, allowing one earned run on four hits. Andrew Hoffman (1-1) pitched the final two innings and took the loss, despite not allowing a hit or issuing a walk.
The Tigers travel to Abilene, Texas, Tuesday, for two games. First up will be McMurry University at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 6:00 p.m. matchup with Hardin-Simmons University. Trinity returns home next weekend to host Texas Lutheran University in a three-game SCAC series, starting Friday at 7:00 p.m. Saturday's doubleheader begins at at 1:00 p.m. The Tigers and Bulldogs are the top-two teams in the conference standings.
