Trinity Volleyball Opens SCAC Cross-Divisional With Two Victories

Sherman, Texas - The Trinity volleyball team opened the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Cross-Divisional with a victory over third-ranked Colorado College, and finished with a decision over Centenary College on Saturday.

MATCH SUMMARIES

Trinity defeated Colorado College 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21) in the opener.

The Texas Tigers were down 11-18 in the first set with their highly ranked opponent when they won 11 straight points to take a 22-18 lead. Colorado College closed to 21-22, but Trinity prevailed over the next three points.

After a 9-9 tie in the second stanza, Trinity led for the rest of the set. Colorado College did close to 10-11, but Trinity held as much as a six-point advantage the rest of the way.

Colorado College jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the third set, when Trinity evened the action at 17-17. An 8-5 scoring advantage gave Colorado its first set of the match-up.

The fourth set was deadlocked at 9-9, when Trinity captured the next three points. Colorado College took the next point, but Trinity won five in a row to lead 17-10. At one mark in the set, Trinity was up 21-11, when the Colorado Tigers began a rally. At Trinity's match point, 24-16, Colorado College posted a five-point rally of its own. But a kill shot enabled Trinity to close out the match.

In the second match of the day, Trinity beat Centenary 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17).

Trinity led the initial set by as much as 13 points, 22-9. The closest the Ladies made it after that part of the match was an eight-point deficit, 17-25, when the Tigers closed out to take a one-set to zero lead.

The second set was all even at 8-8, when Trinity went on a 7-0 scoring run. Centenary came within five, at 10-15, but the Tigers closed with a 10-3 sprint.

Centenary hung tight in the third set, closing to 14-14. But the Tigers produced a signature 11-3 run to win its fourth consecutive match.

NOTABLES

Trinity now stands at 10-3 overall, and 4-1 in SCAC competition.

Kirby Smith hit .619 against Centenary, with 14 kills, one error, and 21 total attacks. Smith registered 16 kills in the match with Colorado College, along with four blocks.

Madeline McKay was a .389 hitter against the Ladies, with eight kills, one error, and 18 attacks. McKay also posted 16 kills in the match with Colorado College.

Jade Schoenberger went .474 against Colorado College, with 11 kills, two errors, and 19 attacks. Schoenberger had a double-double, by chalking up 13 digs.

Erika Edrington made 41 assists against Colorado College, and 14 in the Centenary contest. Katrina Lieberman had 18 assists in the second match of the day.

Rebecca Hayes led the Colorado College tilt with 27 digs, while Sarah Mullens was tops against Centenary with 17.

As a team, Trinity hit .386 against Centenary.

The Tigers conclude the SCAC event Saturday, starting with host Austin College at noon. The finale pits Trinity against the University of Dallas at 2:00 p.m.
