Volleyball Splits Opening Day Action at UW-Oshkosh Invitational

Oshkosh, Wisconsin - The Tiger volleyball team split its first day of matches at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational on Friday, falling to #23 UW-Oshkosh, but beating 18th-ranked Elmhurst in the finale.

 

MATCH SUMMARIES

Trinity opened with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Oshkosh, as the tournament host rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take the win.  The Tigers won 25-19 in the first two sets, followed by the Titans taking the next two sets 25-20 and 25-23.  

The decisive fifth set was tight early, but Oshkosh score six unanswered to take control, and Trinity wasn't able to recover. 

Against Elmhurst, Trinity was again out in front 2-0 after wins of 25-18 and 25-22 to open the match.  Elmhurst rallied for a 25-22 win in the third, but this time the Tigers closed out the match with a 25-23 win to earn the Friday split.

 

NOTABLES

The Tigers now stand at 13-4 on the season.

Maggi Linker hit .500 against UW-Oshkosh, with nine kills, one error and 16 total attacks. Linker also hit .400 against Elmhurst, posting 11 kills, committing three errors, and making 20 total attacks.

Rebecca Hayes hit .467 against the Titans, with seven kills, no errors, and 15 total attacks. Hayes later hit .529 against Elmhurst, posting nine kills, making no errors, and initiating 17 total attacks.

Kirby Smith had two double-doubles on the day. Smith started off with 17 kills and 10 digs against Oshkosh. She then had 19 kills and 19 digs in the day's finale. Smith also hit .381 against Elmhurst, with three errors and 42 attacks.

Sarah Mullens led both the team in digs in both matches, finishing with 22 against UW-Oshkosh, and 21 in the match with Elmhurst.

Erika Edrington first posted 14 assists in the tilt with Oshkosh, and then chalked up 48 against Elmhurst. Edrington also had a double-double in the second match, by making 10 digs.

 

UP NEXT

Trinity wraps up the tournament Saturday, starting with 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 10:00 a.m.  The final match of the weekend for the Tigers is scheduled at noon with Edgewood (WI) College.
