#7 Trinity Splits Opening Day of 2017 Season

Jackson, Mississippi - The NCAA Division III champion Trinity baseball team split its opening games of the campaign Friday, losing 6-2 to the University of Texas-Tyler, and then defeating Millsaps College 11-5.

 

GAME SUMMARIES

Trinity opened the scoring against UT-Tyler with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Patriots tied the game in the second and took the lead with two more runs in the third.

The Tigers scored again in the bottom of the third inning, but couldn't manage another run against the UT-Tyler pitching.  Trinity was held hitless over the final three innings, but did strand a pair of runners in the bottom of the ninth.

The second game featured an offensive onslaught by Trinity, which jumped out to a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.  Millsaps rallied with three runs in its half of the fourth, but the Tigers answered with three runs of its own in the fifth. A three-run eighth for Trinity put the game out of reach.

 

NOTABLES

Jake Martin was 3-5 with two runs scored and one RBI in the win over the Majors, while Scott Walters had two hits and three runs scored. Both players also had doubles in the game.

Joey Pecoraro and Rafe Chaumette finished with two hits each in the second game, while Logan Morrison scored a pair of runs. George Haaland and Blake Frampton drove in two runs each, which included a homer off the bat of Frampton.

Jeff Lonnecker allowed three runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings of work, striking out seven batters to earn the victory for the Tigers. Mark Tindall struck out five batters over the final two innings, giving up just one unearned run and no hits.

Martin also had two of Trinity's seven hits in the opening game, while Martin and John Tucker drove in the team's only runs.

Trevor Griffin was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on 3.2 innings of relief. Michael Maul was Trinity's opening day starter, giving up a run on three hits over the first two-plus innings. Ian Hussian struck out four batters in the final 3.1 innings to finish off the game for the Tigers.

 

UP NEXT

The Tigers will take on Maryville (TN) College and Belhaven (MS) University on Saturday afternoon at Belhaven - which is also in Jackson, Mississippi. Opening pitch against Maryville is scheduled for noon, followed by the game against Belhaven.
