Tigers Upset Sixth-Ranked Centenary in SCAC Series Opener

Box Score

San Antonio - Trinity's baseball team opened a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series with a 2-0 shutout win over sixth-ranked Centenary College on Friday night.

GAME SUMMARY

Trinity and Centenary battled through four scoreless innings in a classic pitcher's duel, which featured just six combined hits by the two teams.

The Tigers broke up the shutout with a pair of runs in the fifth, taking advantage of two walks, two steals, and two hits in the inning.

Centenary put the first two runners on in the sixth, but Trinity turned its second inning-ending double play of the game to keep the Gents off the board.

Tiger pitcher Chris Tate struck out the side in each of the last three innings, including eight consecutive batters to finish off the victory.

NOTABLES

Trinity improved its record to 13-11 overall and 3-4 in SCAC play with its third consecutive win.  Centenary had its 16-game winning streak snapped with the loss, and the Gents fall to 23-4 overall, and 9-1 in conference.

Chris Tate earned his third save of the season by pitching the final four innings of the game without allowing a hit.  He struck out eight batters, and issued just one walk.

Dylan McGee earned the win in a solid outing, pitching five scoreless innings and recording five strikeouts.  McGee (2-2) pitched around five hits and two walks in the game.

McGee and Tate held Centenary to just five hits in the game, which ties their lowest output of the season.  It also marks just the second time this year that the Gents were held to a shutout.

Rafe Chaumette was the only Tiger player with two hits, going 2-3 with a double, and also reaching base on a walk.

Jake Martin's only hit of the game drove in the eventual game-winning run in the fifth, while Michael Davis had a run-scoring infield single with two outs in the inning.
