San Antonio - The Trinity men's soccer team has been ranked eighth in the final poll by D3soccer.com, and #9 by United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Poll.
Led by 28th-year Head Coach Paul McGinlay, the Tigers completed the 2018 campaign with a 17-2-3 overall record, and an 11-0-1 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Trinity made a 17th straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship, and the 22nd overall.
The Tigers defeated Chapman (CA) University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (TX) in the opening rounds of the NCAA postseason event held on Trinity's field. The team headed to Chicago, Illinois, for the purpose of making its sixth Round of 16 appearance in the last seven years. The third-ranked host University of Chicago (IL) ended Trinity's season in the third round.
Earlier, the Tigers won their seventh consecutive SCAC Championship. The championship tilt with Southwestern (TX) University finished with a 1-1 tie, and the Tigers secured the trophy with a 4-2 advantage in penalty kicks.
Coach McGinlay and his assistant coaches were elected the NCAA Division III West Region Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches. Sharing the honor were Assistant Coaches Edward Cartee, Lance Key, Kellen Reid, Luc Scranton, Callum Squires, and Diego Restrepo.
Three Tiger players earned All-America accolades from United Soccer Coaches. Junior Brady Johnston was tabbed for the All-America First Team, senior Austin Michaelis made the Second Team, and sophomore Quentin Van Der Lee was a Third Team recipient.
Johnston was also named the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year, and the SCAC Tournament Offensive Most Valuable Player. He scored nine goals and shelled out four assists during the season, as well as amassing three game-winners. Johnston also led Trinity's defense which allowed opponents just .77 goals per game.
Michaelis earned All-America honors for the third time in a row. He paced the Tigers with 12 goals, including four game-winners, and chalked up four assists. Michaelis scored 43 goals in his career and is ranked seventh in Trinity's record books. His 106 points placed him eighth on the Tigers' all-time lists.
Van Der Lee registered four goals and sent out six assists. He also was a key player on Trinity's stringent defense which shutout opponents 10 times during the season.
