Box Score San Antonio - The Trinity volleyball team earned a ranking of #4 in the nation by the final American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division III Top-25 Coaches Poll.
Led by 35th-year Head Coach Julie Jenkins, the Tigers were ranked seventh in the final regular-season poll. Trinity completed one of its most successful seasons in program history, posting a 37-5 overall record.
Trinity received an automatic bid to its 25th NCAA Division III Tournament and opened with a 3-1 victory over Hunter (NY) College at Newport News, Virginia. Next up was a 3-0 win over Juniata (PA) College in the second round, followed by a 3-0 decision over Marymount (VA) University to claim the Regional title.
The Tigers returned to the NCAA Elite Eight for the sixth time in Trinity history. The sixth-seeded Tigers edged third-ranked Calvin (MI) College 3-2 in a thrilling Quarterfinals matchup at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Trinity extended its winning streak to 23 matches, one victory shy of tying the school record for a single season.
The Semifinals appearance was the third for the Tigers, and the first since 2002. Second-seeded Johns Hopkins (MD) University - the eventual 2019 NCAA champion - came out on top 3-1 in the Cedar Rapids postseason event.
Sophomore middle blocker Emily Ellis was selected for the All-Tournament Team. Ellis was earlier elected to the AVCA All-America Second Team, and the All-West Region First Team. She was ranked third in Division III in total blocks (152), and fifth in hitting percentage (0.415).
Junior outsider hitter Avery Tuggle joined her teammate on the AVCA All-America Second Team. Tuggle fired in 469 kills during the season and was ranked 14th nationally in Division III.
Tuggle and Ellis were tabbed for the AVCA All-West Region Team, while junior outside hitter Annie Rose Leggett was selected for the Honorable Mention Team. Leggett accounted for 577 digs, 386 kills, and 59 service aces.
The road to the NCAAs began with the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament at Seguin, Texas. Trinity defeated Austin (TX) College 3-1 in the Semifinals, and then bested eighth-ranked Colorado College to win its 19th overall SCAC Championship, along with a guaranteed bid to the NCAA Playoffs.
Tuggle was named the SCAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Junior libero/defensive specialist Sami Lin and sophomore middle blocker Emma Funk were selected for the All-Tournament Team. Earlier, Tuggle was named the SCAC Volleyball Player of the Year, and was joined on the All-SCAC First Team by Ellis and Leggett.
Coach Jenkins was elected by her peers as SCAC Coach of the Year for the 14th occasion of her career. During the regular season, Coach Jenkins recorded her 950th career victory. She now stands at 973-421 (.698), and is the winningest active coach in the NCAA Division III.
The Tiger team also finished with high statistical rankings in Division III. Trinity was ranked #1 in team kills (2,057), assists (1,908), and total blocks (334). Trinity hit 0.256 and was ranked eighth nationally.
