#4 Trinity Earns Shutout Victory Over Birmingham-Southern

Box Score

San Antonio – Trinity's fourth-ranked baseball team bounced back after its first loss of the season with a 5-0 shutout victory over Birmingham-Southern (AL) College on Saturday afternoon.

GAME SUMMARY

Trinity did most of its damage early in the game, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after just two innings of action.

Mason Meredith and Jake Martin started off the bottom of the first inning with hits to eventually put the Tigers on the board with a 1-0 lead. The duo came back up in the second to drive in two of the team's three runs in the inning and the lead ballooned to 4-0.

James Nittoli pitched around multiple hits in each of the first two innings to set up the Tiger offense to take the lead, stranding two Birmingham base runners in each frame.

After the Panthers left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Trinity was able to scratch across an insurance run on an infield single that made it a five-run lead.

That was more than enough for Nittoli, who enjoyed the longest outing of his career, but fell two outs short of a complete-game shutout. After the fifth, Birmingham didn't get another runner in scoring position until there were two outs in the ninth and the game was out of reach.

NOTABLES

Trinity improves to 3-1 on the season after the win, while Birmingham falls to 2-3 overall with the loss.  The teams have split the first two games of the series to set up a winner-take-all finale for game three.

James Nittoli (2-0) pitched into the ninth inning and combined with first-year Arjun Thakar for the six-hit shutout. Nittoli gave up six hits over 8.1 innings, striking out two batters.

Mason Meredith and Jake Martin both went 2-4 at the top of the Tiger lineup. Meredith scored twice and drove in another, picking up his second double of the year.

John Tucker enjoyed a 2-3 night, scoring a run and also hitting his second double of the young season.
