#2 Trinity Baseball Opens Home Series With Win Over #6 Babson

San Antonio - The second-ranked Tiger baseball team opened up a weekend showdown against #6 Babson (MA) College on Friday, taking the series opener by a final score of 10-6.

GAME SUMMARY

Trinity rallied on two separate occasions to tie the game, then pulled ahead late to earn the victory. Babson scored three runs on three hits in the second inning of the game to take the early advantage. The Tigers were able to notch two runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to make it a 3-2 game after two.

Jack Vonderhaar sent a two-out shot down the right field line in the third to score Michael Goodrich with the tying run in the bottom of the third, but Babson went back in front 4-3 with another run in the fifth. Trinity answered again in the bottom of the inning to tie things up.

In the sixth, Trinity took its first lead of the game with a huge four-run inning that was highlighted by Rafe Chaumette's two-run triple that made it an 8-4 lead for the home team. Babson came right back with a run in the seventh to keep the game close, but Tyler Pettit crushed a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to put the Tigers up 10-5. 

Babson put the first two runners on base in the ninth in a comeback bid, but the Tigers were able to escape with just one run allowed to finish off the win.

 

NOTABLES

The Tigers are now 8-0 to start the season, while Babson takes a loss in its first game of the year.

Jack Vonderhaar and Tyler Pettit had three hits each to lead a 14-hit night for Trinity. Vonderhaar had three runs scored and hit his team-leading third triple of the season. Pettit finished with a double and a home run among his three hits, driving in three runs and scoring two more.

Rafe Chaumette tied Vonderhaar for the team lead with his third triple of the year, driving in a pair of runs in the game. 

Mason Meredith was the only other Trinity player with more than one hit, going 2-5 with one RBI. 

All nine players in the Tiger lineup had at least one hit in the game.

Matthew Thomas (1-0) took the win after tossing 3.1 innings of relief. Corey Cater threw 4.0 innings to start the game, allowing three unearned runs on six hits. Cater and Thomas led the Tigers with four strikeouts each in the game.

Trinity and Babson continue the weekend series with a 1:00 p.m. game tomorrow afternoon.
