Trinity Sweeps SCAC Swimmers and Divers of the Year Honors

Box Score

San Antonio - Trinity swimmers and divers have earned high honors from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC),

Juniors Beau Tipton and Anthony Liva have been elected the respective SCAC Male Swimmer and Diver of the Year. Junior Mabel Fowler and sophomore Maren Merwarth were tabbed as the SCAC Female Swimmer and Diver of the Year.

All contributed to Trinity's SCAC Championships last month at San Antonio's Josh Davis Natatorium. Trinity's women won their 17th consecutive conference title while the men picked up their 12th overall trophy.

After the conference championship meet, Tipton was named the SCAC Men's Swimmer of the Meet and Liva was tabbed as the Men's Diver of the Meet. Fowler was selected as the SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Meet and Merwarth was named Women's Diver of the Meet.

Tipton earned the Swimmer of the Year accolade for the second straight time. He became the first male to receive the honor back to back since Trinity's Stephen Culberson attained that feat in 2014 and 2015. Additionally, Tipton is the seventh consecutive Tiger swimmer to win the award.

He qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships, which were later canceled. Tipton was the ninth seed in the 200-yard butterfly at 1:48.54. He was 33rd in the 500 freestyle (4:34.17) and was #38 in the 200 freestyle (1:40.56).

Tipton won the SCAC 200 butterfly for the second straight year, setting a conference record of 1:48.60. He also captured the 500 freestyle, finishing less than a second off the record. Tipton also was part of the champion 800 freestyle relay and 400 medley relay teams.

Liva won the SCAC titles on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. His score of 576.40 on the 3-meter board was the second-highest in SCAC Championship meet history. Liva was the only male diver from the conference to qualify for the NCAA Division III Region 2 Championships, which were hosted by Trinity at Hixon Natatorium. He placed fifth in the 3-meter competition and sixth in the 1-meter.

Fowler's election marked the sixth time in the last eight years - and seventh overall - that a Trinity student-athlete has been named the SCAC Female Swimmer of the Year.

She had received bids to the NCAA Championships, and was seeded 15th in the 200 backstroke at 2:01.76. Fowler was ranked 19th in the 200 freestyle (151.86) and 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:45.37).

Fowler turned in superb performances at the SCAC Championships. Fowler won three individual championships in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 backstroke. She also helped her teammates to titles in the 800 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, and 400 freestyle relay.

After the SCAC Championships, Fowler stood at #4 all time in conference championships.

Merwarth won Diver of the Year kudos for the second consecutive occasion. Her election marked the 15th year in a row a Trinity diver achieved the honor. She also had received a bid to the NCAA Championships for the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

She brought home the conference gold by winning the 3-meter event, and finished second on the 1-meter. At the NCAA Region 2 Championships, Merwarth placed second on the 1-meter board and was third on the 3-meter.
