San Antonio - Nine Trinity swimmers and divers have received All-America honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
Junior swimmer Beau Tipton earned the men's kudos from the CSCAA. Seniors Elizabeth Nelson and Star Rosales, junior Mabel Fowler, along with sophomores Meghan Magill, Morgen Reyna, and Libby Goode represented the Tiger women's swim team. Sophomore women's divers Maren Merwarth and Katarina Partalas also received All-America recognition.
All had been selected to compete in the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships March 18-21 at Greensboro, North Carolina. The NCAA canceled the championships because of concern over COVID-19, so the CSCAA chose to honor the talented student-athletes with All-America accolades.
Tipton was the ninth seed in the men's 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:48.54. He achieved Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 200 fly at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Tipton earned Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Men's Swimmer of the Year distinction for the second occasion in a row, becoming the first male to receive the honor back to back since Trinity's Stephen Culberson attained that feat in 2014 and 2015.
Fowler received women's All-America honors in three individual events and two relay races. She was seeded 15th in the 200 backstroke at 2:01.76 and earned Honorable Mention All-America distinction last year. Fowler was ranked 19th in the 200 freestyle (1:51.86) and 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:57.37). Fowler was elected the SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Year, marking the sixth time in the last eight years - and seventh overall, a Trinity student-athlete received the highest conference honor.
Fowler, Reyna, Nelson and Rosales held the #16 position in the 400 free relay (3:27.84). Magill was to join Fowler, Reyna, and Rosales on the 16th-seeded 800 free relay team (7:32.63), while Goode was an alternate in the event. Rosales was an Honorable Mention All-American in the 200 free relay at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
Merwarth and Partlas earned All-America women's diving honors on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Both qualified for the national meet because of performances at the NCAA Division III Region 2 Diving Championships held at Trinity. Partalas won the 1-meter event and was fifth on the high board. Merwarth was runner-up on the 1-meter board and placed third on the 3-meter.
Merwarth won SCAC Women's Diver of the Year kudos for the second consecutive occasion. Her selection marked the 15th year in a row a Trinity diver achieved the honor.
Trinity's women won their 17th consecutive conference title, while the men picked up their 12th overall trophy. Tiger coaches were named SCAC Men's and Women's Coaching Staff of the Year. Scott Trompeter is the head swimming coach, while Stan Randall runs the diving program. John Ryan and Kimberly Jones are assistant swimming coaches.
CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart had high praise for the Trinity teams.
"Despite the cancellation of the NCAA Championships, Coach Trompeter did a remarkable job this season," Earhart said. "These nine student-athletes had the rug pulled out from them this season, so we are excited to recognize them."
