No. 3 Tigers Sweep St. Thomas, Schreiner to Conclude SCAC Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KERRVILLE, Texas - No. 3 Trinity University Volleyball collected another pair of sweeps in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Sunday on the campus of Schreiner University, defeating University of St. Thomas followed by the host Mountaineers to finalize the weekend.

The Tigers (27-2, 14-0 SCAC) have won 22-consecutive regular-season conference matches and 48-straight matches played in Texas.

Senior outside hitter Annie Rose Leggett (Austin, Texas / Westwood) encored her career defensive performances from Saturday as she led Trinity with 23 digs in five of Sunday's six sets to mark 78 digs (6.50 per set) for the weekend.

Leggett's counterpart on the outside and fellow senior Avery Tuggle (Cedar Creek, Texas / Cedar Creek) paced a widespread Trinity attack that featured four Tigers in double-figures on the day.

Trinity's impressive .335 team hitting percentage and 15 kills per set on the day came through the efficient combined efforts of setters junior Marisa Amarino (Calabasas, Calif. / Notre Dame) and senior Alexis Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas / Incarnate Word), with 36 and 30 assists respectively.

Senior rightsides Sara Flynn (Seattle, Wash. / Roosevelt) and Sarah Williammee (Denver, Colo. / East) each posted 15-plus kills on .400-plus hitting percentages on the day to compliment Tuggle's outside performance. Flynn and senior middle blocker Emma Funk (Pass Christian, Miss. / Our Lady) combined for five blocks each to lead the defensive effort up front.

No. 3 Trinity Volleyball finally returns to San Antonio on Saturday (Oct. 30) to host its final two SCAC matchups, Schreiner and No. 16 Southwestern University.

Trinity 3, St. Thomas 0

The Tigers opened Sunday's action with a relentless attack in their opening set with the Celts, posting a .462 hitting percentage with zero unforced errors and hit into just one St. Thomas block. Tuggle led a balanced effort with five kills, followed by Williammee and Leggett with four kills each en route to the tone-setting 25-11 victory.

Competition settled in as both sides found more success on the block for the second and third games, leading to closer margins of 25-23 and 25-22 both in favor of Trinity for its 10th sweep in SCAC play this season.

Sophomore middle blocker Maddie Fate (Croton on Hudson, N.Y. / Croton Harmon) narrowly edged Flynn for the second-set scoring lead as she logged three blocks, two solo, along with three kills to Flynn's four kills and two blocks. Tuggle and Funk took the reins in scoring for the final frame as Tuggle tallied four more kills and Funk teamed up with Williammee for the Tigers' two blocks for the set.

Trinity 3, Schreiner 0

The Tigers committed just four errors on ;95 swings in the weekend finale to post an unstoppable .400 hitting percentage against the host Mountaineers, only two of which were unforced.

Tuggle and Williammee each posted 10 kills to just one error between the pair. The latter's double-digit performance came on 17 error-free attempts for a .588 hitting rate.

Runs of 9-2, 8-0 and 7-2, respectively, between the first through third frames characterized Trinity's success en route to a pair of double-digit set victories while the team .500 hitting rate in the final set proved to be too much for Schreiner's late attempt.

Up Next

No. 3 Trinity Volleyball carries its 14-0 SCAC record back to Calgaard Gym for its final two conference matchups Saturday, facing Schreiner and No. 16 Southwestern for a chance at the Tigers' first undefeated regular season in league play since the 2007 campaign, 14th overall since 1991.

The Tigers will then play host to the 2021 SCAC Championship tournament the weekend of November 5-7 as the top six teams in the league will square off for a chance at this season's conference title and automatic entry into the 2021 NCAA III National Championship tournament.
