No. 2 Volleyball Clinches Undefeated SCAC Season, defeats Schreiner, No. 16 Southwestern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN ANTONIO - No. 2 Trinity University Volleyball finished off the regular season schedule with a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victories as it opened the day with a sweep of Schreiner University, followed by the statement four-set victory against No. 16 Southwestern University in the night cap.

The Tigers (29-2, 16-0 SCAC) completed their first undefeated regular season in conference play since 2007 with the evening's victory. Trinity also extended its second-longest NCAA III active home winning streak to 35 matches and its consecutive victories in the state of Texas to 50 in a row.

Senior outside hitter Annie Rose Leggett (Austin, Texas / Westwood) made a crucial leap in the Tigers' all-time service aces leaderboard to lead the Trinity offense with eight aces on the day, seven against the Mountaineers, to go with a team-leading 20 kills and four blocks. The reigning SCAC Defensive Player of the Week also paced the Tigers with 33 digs.

Senior middle blocker Emily Ellis (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) made her presence known on the block with eight of her nine blocks on the day logged in Trinity's eighth victory over a nationally-ranked opponent this season, one shy of her career-high match performance.

The Tiger program honored its eight seniors prior to its bout with the No. 16 Pirates, recognizing the careers of Leggett, Ellis, outside hitter Avery Tuggle (Cedar Creek, Texas), setter Alexis Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas / Incarnate Word), libero Sami Lin (Sugar Land, Texas / Fort Bend), rightsides Sara Flynn (Seattle, Wash. / Roosevelt) and Sarah Williammee (Denver, Colo. / East) and middle blocker Emma Funk (Pass Christian, Miss. / Our Lady).

No. 2 Trinity Volleyball now prepares to host the 2021 SCAC Championship tournament next weekend in Calgaard Gym, with a pair of matches to take place each day from November 5-7.

Trinity 3, Schreiner 0

The opening match began with three straight Tiger points that included a pair of service aces from Leggett. Trinity notched seven of the first eight points overall to take full control of the opening set and the lead ballooned to 11 points (20-9) on the strength of another 7-1 stretch. The set closed with two more service aces - this time from fellow senior Avery Tuggle (Cedar Creek, Texas / Cedar Creek).

Schreiner matched Trinity in the early moments of the second set and even took its first lead of the match with a 6-4 advantage. The Tigers rattled off four straight to pull in front for good, though, winning eight of 10 points in one run that made it a 17-10 lead. Schreiner drew to within three with a 4-0 run, but Trinity had started an 8-2 closing run with four straight points to take the 2-0 lead.

Trinity took the early advantage again in set three, but Schreiner managed to keep pace throughout the final set, staving off the sweep as long as it could. Each time the Tigers made a run, Schreiner answered with its own spurt. The Mountaineers never got closer than two points down the stretch and Trinity closed by scoring four of the final five points to finish off the opening matchup.

Trinity 3, Southwestern 1

The Tigers entered its final regular season contest with the chance at its first undefeated regular season in conference following the pre-match senior recognition festivities to face a prepared Southwestern squad that capitalized with a 25-18 first-set victory.

After Trinity regained its footing, the match was held in control as it swept through the second, third and fourth frames without allowing the Pirates to reach the 20-point threshold in any of the three.

Leggett notched all three of her blocks for the match in the rebound second set while she also paced the offense with four kills as Trinity returned to a .300 team hitting percentage. Ellis led the frame with four of her eight blocks for the match as the senior duo worked in tandem at the net.

Tuggle took control of the pin in the third with four kills of her own along with a pair of blocks and a team-leading five digs, aided by three-kill efforts from Leggett and Funk. The final frame put an exclamation mark on Ellis's resurgence on the evening as she dropped five kills and a pair of solo blocks to slam the door on the Pirates.
