Box Score Sherman, Texas – The second-ranked Tiger volleyball team resumed its spring 2021 season with a pair of 3-0 road wins over Schreiner (Texas) University on Saturday afternoon.
The Rundown: Match One
Trinity eased ahead 8-4 in the opening moments of the first set, but Schreiner battled back and then pulled in front. The Mountaineers used a 7-1 run to take its biggest lead at 20-13, but this time it was a Tiger rally that changed the set. Trinity scored eight consecutive points to pull in front, then broke a 23-23 tie with back-to-back scores to win 25-23.
The second set was back-and-forth early, but Trinity took control with a 14-2 run that put the visitors in front 20-7. The Tigers then took a 2-0 match lead by scoring five of the final eight points.
Schreiner fought hard early in the third as well, but the Tigers scored seven unanswered points to take control at 13-7. Trinity's lead was at least five points the rest of the way, and finished things off with three straight points to win 25-17.
By the Numbers: Match One
Annie Rose Leggett (Austin, Texas / Westwood) and Avery Tuggle (Cedar Creek, Texas / Cedar Creek) led Trinity with nine kills each, while also reaching double figures in digs. Leggett finished with 14 and Tuggle had 10, while Leggett also recorded the only block for the Tiger team.
Nadia Kern (El Paso, Texas / Montwood) paced the defense with 15 digs, while Sami Lin (Sugar Land, Texas / Fort Bend Christian) finished with 10 digs and a pair of aces.
Marisa Amarino (Calabasas, Calif. / Notre Dame Prep) edged her teammate to lead the Tigers with 20 assists, adding five digs and a service ace. Lexie Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas / Incarnate Word HS) finished with 18 assists and six digs.
Brette Thornton (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) finished with seven kills in her nine attacks, and she didn't commit an error for a .778 hitting percentage in the match. Emily Ellis (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) also had seven kills and a stout .538 hitting percentage.
The Rundown: Match Two
Trinity was dominant in all three sets to finish off the doubleheader, winning 25-14, 25-15, and 25-16 to earn the sweep.
The Tigers led most of the way in the opening set, but Schreiner was hanging in with a five-point deficit at 17-12. Trinity continued to finish sets strong, though, scoring eight of the final 10 points to take the 1-0 match lead.
Schreiner picked up the first point of the second set, but it was all Trinity after that. The Tigers sprinted to a 7-2 lead early on, then turned a slim 10-6 advantage into a commanding 19-9 margin. The teams traded points the rest of the way, but the damage had been done.
By the Numbers: Match Two
Sarah Williammee (Denver, Colo. / East) paced a balanced attack with nine kills and a .615 hitting percentage.
Leggett recorded 14 digs to lead the team in the Saturday finale, adding six kills and a pair of aces.
Kern had 13 digs and Tuggle had 11 to make it three Tigers in double figures in the second match. Tuggle also added eight kills to her stat line.
Amarino was once again the team leader with 19 assists in the second match, while Acevedo finished with 12 assists and six digs.
Ellis and Sara Flynn (Seattle, Wash. / Roosevelt) finished with four blocks each to lead the team. Ellis added eight kills and a pair of digs, while Flynn also had six kills and three digs.

"Our focus, drive, and energy were outstanding from the beginning to the end of all six sets today," said Head Coach Julie Jenkins. "Holding Schreiner to zero aces in both matches is a reflection of this team's ball control. We executed well both offensively and defensively averaging over 15 kills and 20 digs per set!"

Trinity will be back on the road next weekend, facing off against fourth-ranked Colorado College on Friday, March 5, and Saturday, March 6. Friday's match is set for a 4:00 p.m. (MT) start, while Saturday's action begins at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
