Box Score Alpine, Texas - The top-ranked Tiger baseball team finished its weekend at Sul Ross State University by taking the rubber game of the three-game series by a final score of 9-5 on Sunday.
Trinity improves to 9-1 this season with the win, and the Tigers clinched the series by answering Friday night's loss with back-to-back wins on Saturday and Sunday. The team is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Concordia (TX) University for two more road games for the Tigers.
The Rundown
After Sul Ross took the lead with runs in the second and third innings, Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) tied things up with a two-run double in the top of the fourth.
In the fifth, the Tigers took their first lead of the day on a grand slam from Jack Vonderhaar (Woodinville, Wash. / Redmond) that made it a 6-2 game. Sul Ross scratched across a run in the bottom of the inning, but Trinity still led 6-3 after five.
Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas / Memorial) drove in a run as Trinity added two more insurance runs in the sixth, taking an 8-3 lead into the final three innings. After Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) finished off the Tiger scoring with his RBI double in the eighth, Sul Ross got two runs back to close the gap to 9-5 heading into the final inning.
Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / Alexander) came on in relief and finished off the game in the ninth, entering with two runners on and just one out. He promptly struck out the next two hitters to close out the Tiger win.
