Box Score ABILENE, Texas - No. 3 Trinity University Baseball improved to 6-0 Tuesday as it took its midweek visit to Hardin-Simmons, 7-3.
Sophomore leftfielder Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / LaSalle College) parked a pair of solo shots over the fence to keep the bats moving as the Tigers scored in all of the first five innings.
First-year right-hander Harrison Durow (Dallas, Texas / Lovejoy) picked up his first collegiate victory from the mound with five and two-thirds innings of work in relief as he cooled the Cowboy offense early.
The Rundown
The visiting Tigers struck immediately Tuesday night as leadoff hitter senior rightfielder Rafe Chaumette (Sugar Land, Texas / Clement) powered one through the right side and was followed by a double to the right-center gap from senior shortstop Michael Herrera (Phoenix, Ariz. / Sunrise Mountain), placing both runners in scoring position. Juniors thirdbaseman Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian College Prep) and firstbaseman Jack Vonderhaar (Woodinville, Wash. / Redmond) scored Chaumette and Herrera on a groundout to second and an infield single, respectively.
Hardin-Simmons briefly regained control in the bottom of the first with a trio of runs tagged to Trinity starter, sophomore Arjun Thakar (Sugar Land, Texas / Dulles), which set the stage for Durow's second relief appearance in 2021.
The Tigers scored one run in each of the second through fifth frames, then found the plate one more time in the seventh. Schaub and senior centerfielder Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas / Memorial) collected all five of Trinity's runs during this portion of the game; Meredith scored in the second and fourth innings while Schaub scored in the third, fifth and seventh twice by way of the deep-ball.
Senior closer Matthew Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Horizon) assumed the mound from senior reliever Carter Fronk (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) in the bottom of the ninth to close the book on the Cowboys with a perfect frame.
Notable Numbers
Schaub doubled his season total of home runs to four with his pair of solo shots, pushing the team's total to 10 through six games.
Four Tigers collected multi-hit games: Herrera, Schaub, Vonderhaar, and senior designated hitter/catcher Michael Goodrich (Gilbert, Ariz. / Basha).
Durow fanned seven Hardin-Simmons batters in just under six shutout relief innings for his first decision of the season.
