Box Score Houston, Texas - The top-ranked Tiger baseball team began its three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend with an 8-7 win over the University of St. Thomas in 10 innings.
Trinity out-hit St. Thomas 16-11 in the game and was plagued by a season-high six errors in the field. The Tigers still managed to pull off the extra-inning win as Michael Goodrich (Gilbert, Ariz. / Basha) singled in the 10th and then came around to score on a fielder's choice from Jack Baker (Sugar Land, Texas / Ridge Point).
St. Thomas took the lead initially with a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning. Trinity's offense hammered out five hits in the second as its answer, scoring four runs to take a 4-2 lead. MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest) put the finishing touches on the scoring with his two-run homer. The home team was not done scoring, though, adding three more runs in the bottom of the second to pull back in front 5-4.
Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) had a one-out triple in the third and came home on a sacrifice fly by Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) that tied the game, then Trinity took the lead on an RBI single from Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas / Memorial) in the sixth. Wisniewski drove in another run in the inning to make it 7-5 and the Tiger pitchers finally settled in.
St. Thomas took advantage of one of the Tiger errors to get one of the runs back in the fifth, then turned a one-out walk into a game-tying single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Trinity went down in order in the eighth and ninth, but the Celts nearly stole the game in the final half-inning. St. Thomas drew a leadoff walk, then bunted the runner over to second. Following an intentional walk, both runners stole a base to take away the force play. The Celts then lined out to first and popped up to second and hte Tigers escaped to extra innings.
In the 10th, Trinity set up the go-ahead score with back-to-back one-out hits from Goodrich and Metz. Rafe Chaumette (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) was intentionally walked after the runners moved up on a wild pitch, setting up Baker with the game-winning RBI.
Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C. / Hough) and Ethan Clark (Cypress, Texas / Cy Fair) combined to strike out 11 batters, but the Tiger pitchers also allowed seven runs on 10 hits over the first 6.2 innings. Matthew Mackey and Harrison Durow (Dallas, Texas / Lovejoy) closed out the game, allowing just one hit over the final 3.1 innings. Mackey (1-0) earned his first career win and Durow picked up his first career save.
Trinity and St. Thomas will finish off the series with a Saturday doubleheader, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
