#1 Tigers Open SCAC Series With Shutout Victory

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Top-ranked Trinity University Baseball chalked up its seventh-straight victory on Thursday night, earning a decisive 9-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Austin College.

The Tigers (14-1, 4-0 SCAC) gradually bounced away from the Kangaroos (4-10, 0-7 SCAC) with a pair of runs in each of the third and fifth innings before they sealed it off with a four-run sixth frame.

Junior second baseman Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) led the Trinity offense with a 3-4 effort from the plate that featured four RBI. Centerfielder Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas / Memorial) joined Wisniewski in the three-hit club and he also crossed the plate three times.

First-year right-hander Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C. / Hough) got the nod and collected his third victory from the mound this season with five shutout innings in which he collected four strikeouts and scattered a total of eight baserunners.

Fellow first-year Ethan Clark (Cypress, Texas / Cy Fair) notched his first career save as he tallied four punchouts over four hitless innings to keep the 'Roos off the board.

No. 1 Trinity Baseball rounds out its three-game home series with the 'Roos tomorrow at the Trinity Baseball Field.

The Rundown

Trinity got the scoring started with a three-hit third inning, as Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) hit a run-scoring single down the left field line and Wisniewski picked up the first of his four RBI on the night.

Wisniewski was back at it in the fifth to double the Tigers' lead with a two-run single that made it a 4-0 advantage. He also finished off the four-run sixth with another RBI single, which was preceded by Meredith's two-run double and a run-scoring single by Michael Herrera (Phoenix, Ariz. / Sunrise Mountain).

Clark came on for McGahan after the first two batters in the top of the sixth reached base, then promptly induced an inning-altering double play that kept it a 4-0 game at the time. Clark walked the leadoff man in the seventh, but after a flyout to right, got another double play to erase the mistake. He then struck out the side in the ninth to put an exclamation mark on his outing.

Numbers to Note

Wisniewski and Meredith combined for six hits and drove in six of the team's nine runs in the game, while Meredith scored three runs.

Schaub finished 2-4 with two doubles and two RBI, while Herrera crossed the plate three times to match Meredith for the team lead.

Up Next

Trinity and Austin continue the SCAC series with a Friday doubleheader that is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
