Box Score 2 San Antonio – Trinity's top-ranked baseball team finished off its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series against Austin College with a doubleheader sweep on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers extended their winning streak to nine games with the two wins, improving to 16-1 overall and remaining undefeated after six games in conference play.
Trinity scored eight runs in the final three innings to pull away from Austin College in a 12-4 win in game one, then rallied with four runs in the seventh to take an 8-6 win in the series finale.
Game One Rundown
Trinity's defense committed four errors in the top of the second inning of game one, and Austin College took advantage of them all to take a 3-0 lead. Luckily for the Tigers, the offense made sure the home team didn't trail for long.
After MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest) drove in the first Tiger run of the game in the bottom of the second, Michael Goodrich (Gilbert, Ariz. / Basha) tied things up with his two-run single. Rafe Chaumette (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) put Trinity in front with a run-scoring single of his own just two batters later.
Neither team had another hit until the sixth, when the Tigers scratched across another run on two hits to make it a 5-3 ball game.
Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas / Memorial) started off a six-run seventh inning for Trinity with his two-RBI single, then Jack Vonderhaar (Woodinville, Wash. / Redmond) doubled in another run to keep the inning going. Goodrich blew the game open with a bases-clearing double that made it an 11-3 lead for the Tigers.
Both teams added single runs in the eighth, but the lead was too much for Austin to overcome.
Game Two Rundown
Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) got the second game started with his two-run triple in the bottom of the second, and Chaumette added another RBI to his daily total to put Trinity in front 3-0 early.
Austin College answered with its best inning of the series, scoring four runs on a pair of hits and taking advantage of two more Tiger errors to take a 4-3 lead. The 'Roos added two more runs in the fourth to increase the margin, but it would be the last scores of the series for the visitors.
Trinity got one of the runs back on a sacrifice fly from Michael Herrera (Phoenix, Ariz. / Sunrise Mountain) in the fifth, but the Tigers stranded two more runners in the sixth and still trailed 6-4 with just nine outs to play.
Turns out the Tigers just needed the seventh to turn the game around, though, scoring four runs on four hits to take the lead. Nathan Braulick (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) tied things up with a sac fly, then Wisniewski and Metz drove in two more runs to put Trinity on top for good.
Austin College put the tying run on base in both the eighth and ninth innings, but the Tigers were able to hang on for the win to sweep the series.
Numbers to Note
Jack Schmitt (St. Louis, Mo. / Lafayette) and Carter Fronk (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) wrapped up the second game on the mound for the Tigers, combining for six strikeouts over four shutout innings to close out the series.
