Box Score SAN ANTONIO - No. 2 Trinity University Baseball surrendered a 14-12 margin to No. 19 Centenary College at the Trinity Baseball Field Sunday afternoon in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series finale after it clinched the weekend victory Saturday evening.
The offensive explosion between the Tigers (25-4, 12-2 SCAC) and Gents (29-7, 13-5 SCAC) featured a combined 12 different pitchers on the mound, 12 multi-hit performances and four home runs.
Senior secondbaseman Scott Petersen (San Rafael, Calif. / Marin Catholic) and junior catcher Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) fueled the Trinity offense with three RBI each, Petersen's coming in a three-for-four performance from the plate.
The first two slots in the Tiger lineup collected the pair of home runs for the black jerseys; senior rightfielder Rafe Chaumette (Sugar Land, Texas / Clement) notched his second longball of the series with a leadoff shot to left field in the third frame, junior shortstop Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) notched his first homer of the season with a two-out, two-run bomb in the fifth.
Sunday's mound decision was handed to first-year right-hander Ethan Clark (Cypress, Texas / Cy Fair) in the midst of the afternoon's bullpen shuffle. Clark came on in the seventh inning and was the sixth of seven Tigers to make an appearance on the bump.
No. 2 Trinity University concludes the regular-season home slate Tuesday night as the Tigers invite Texas Lutheran University to San Antonio for a non-conference rematch Tuesday night.
The Rundown
The Tigers fell behind early as Centenary collected a three-run advantage before the Trinity bats made their first appearance. Senior centerfielder Mason Meredith (Houston, Texas / Memorial) responded with a RBI knock through the right side of the infield before Chamuette's third-inning lead-off shot cut the deficit to 4-2.
Pettit and Petersen each tallied their first RBI in the fourth frame to draw the outing even. Pettit plated Meredith on a sacrifice fly deep into center field before Petersen pushed first-year third baseman Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veteran's Memorial) across with a base-hit up the middle. The back-and-forth affair resumed in the ensuing top-half as the Gents found a quartet in the fifth inning.
More than half of the Tigers' scoring came in response in the bottom of the fifth as seven Trinity baserunners found the plate. Pettit opened the barrage with a two-RBI single into right field, followed by Petersen's second RBI base-hit of the afternoon, a Chaumette double into right-center and capped by Wisniewski's first homer of 2021. Meredith, Pettit, Petersen, Chaumette, Wisniewski, sophomore designated hitter Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle) and first-year leftfielder Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) all crossed the plate in the melee.
Petersen returned to the plate in the bottom of the sixth to plate his final RBI with another knock into centerfield to score senior first baseman Michael Goodrich (Gilbert, Ariz. / Basha) before the Gents would find five unanswered runs to steal the weekend's finale.
Notable Numbers
Entering the final week of the 2021 regular season, Rafe Chaumette has a handful of career stats to watch. The senior outfielder has extended his all-time record of triples to 16, now a lead of three. He is also perched at 248 career hits, a team-high 50 of which have come this season, which lands him sixth in Trinity history just four knocks away from third all-time. In addition, the Sugar Land, Texas-native is in the top-ten in games played (172; seventh) and RBI (157; ninth) and is one double shy of the top-ten list at 43 two-baggers.
Following a pair of free passes Sunday, Schaub sits with a NCAA III-leading 36 walks: the seventh-best season total in Trinity history. This afternoon's designated hitter also sits at 10 home runs this season, one shy of cracking the Tigers' all-time top-ten list.
