#1 Tiger Baseball Blanks Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday

Box Score

San Antonio – Top-ranked Trinity University baseball eased its way to a shutout victory in non-conference action on Tuesday night, defeating the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 6-0 at the Trinity Baseball Field.

The midweek performance was led by junior second baseman Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) with a trio of base hits from his three-spot in the lineup. First-year right-hander Jack Schmitt (St. Louis, Mo. / Lafayette) grabbed his third victory from the mound with 3.1 relief innings, and senior closer Matthew Thomas (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Horizon) snatched his third save of the season with three clean innings to preserve the staff-shutout.

The Rundown

Trinity's offense was held without a hit until the third inning, though the Tigers did draw three walks in the second inning of action. Trinity left the bases loaded in the second, then broke through with a pair of hits in the third, but the game remained scoreless until the fifth inning.

A pair of walks and a pair of hits led to a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, beginning with a leadoff walk to Michael Goodrich (Gilbert, Ariz. / Basha). Michael Herrera (Phoenix, Ariz. / Sunrise Mountain) drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right, followed by an RBI single off the bat of Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) that put Trinity on top 2-0.

Mary Hardin-Baylor threatened with runners on in the seventh, but Thomas escaped his first inning of work by stranding the bases loaded.

After two quick outs in the bottom half of the eighth, MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest) clanged a solo homer off the scoreboard in left-center to spark a four-run outburst that put the game out of reach. Wisniewski wrapped up the scoring for Trinity with his RBI single.

After allowing a leadoff single in the ninth, Thomas struck out the side to put the finishing touches on the combined shutout. Mark Tindall (Houston, Texas / Lamar) made his first appearance since the 2019 season, getting the starting nod and combining with Schmitt and Thomas for the shutout.

Numbers to Note

Thomas struck out five batters over the final three innings, allowing just two hits among 13 batters faced. Schmitt (3-0) also yielded just two hits in 3.1 innings of work, striking out four batters. Tindall recorded a pair of strikeouts in his return to action.

Wisniewski went 3-5 to account for three of the team's eight total hits on the night, while the home run by Metz was his second of the 2021 campaign.

Goodrich walked twice, scored a pair of runs, and stole two bases, while Rafe Chaumette (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) drew two walks and also scored twice.
