Trinity Women FInish Strong to Beat Colorado College

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger women's basketball team finished off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep with a 72-57 win over Colorado College on Sunday afternoon.

The win also marks a regular season series sweep for Trinity, which also beat Colorado College on the road last week. Trinity has now won 13 consecutive games, which is the team's longest streak since winning 14 in a row during the 2016-17 season. The team also improves to 14-2 overall and remains unbeaten at 7-0 in conference play.

Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) and Hailey Coleman (Kansas City, Mo. / St. Teresa's Academy) accounted for nearly half of Trinity's total scoring in today's game, combining for 35 points on 14-of-25 shooting.

The TU Tigers won't have long to celebrate the weekend, as Trinity will be back on the court against Southwestern University on Tuesday night.

The Rundown

Trinity was in front early, but Colorado College scored nine straight points and led 11-5 midway through the opening quarter of play. That lead went as high as nine points for the visitors, but Trinity scored six of the final eight points of the period and trailed 13-17 after one. Shipley dropped in a pair of layups in that final stretch, including the last score in the final seconds of the quarter.

The second quarter began with Trinity scoring six straight points to take a brief 19-17 lead, and Colorado College broke up the run to tie the game. After the teams traded three-point baskets to remain tied, Trinity went on an 8-2 run to jump in front 30-24 with under four minutes left in the half. Trinity still led by five with 2:25 left when Colorado College scored five straight to tie the game with just over a minute remaining in the quarter. Each team hit a layup in the final seconds, but once again, it was Shipley with the final shot to make it 36-36 at the break.

Colorado College scored the first four points of a low-scoring third quarter to take the early advantage, but Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) finished off a three-point play that capped five straight Trinity points to make it a 41-40 lead for the home team. Colorado College answered with back-to-back layups, but another three-point play – this time from Shipley – tied things up 44-44 with 4:05 remaining in the period. Colorado College scored again to ease in front, but Emily Nelson (Sugar Land, Texas / Saint Agnes) sparked a 7-0 spurt to close the quarter with her three-pointer with just over three minutes left. Shipley hit another layup in the final minute, then Ava Limonciello (Waltham, Mass. / St. Mark's) got a steal and a fast break layup to beat the buzzer and make it a 51-46 Trinity lead.

Trinity's run to finish the third quarter extended into the fourth, and wound up being 12 straight points and a 56-46 lead with less than eight minutes left in the game. Colorado College was able to cut that lead in half by the midway point, but Trinity limited the visitors to just four points over the final 5:10 of the game. In the meantime, Trinity's offense scored 14 points during that stretch and blew the game open. It all started with six quick points to push the lead back to double figures, then after Colorado College broke that up with a basket, the TU Tigers scored eight more unanswered to make it a 17-point advantage with just 1:37 to go.

Numbers to Note

Coleman scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the game, recording a team-leading three blocks and collecting eight rebounds.

Shipley added five rebounds to go with her team-best 18 points in today's game, as well as tying for the team lead with three assists.

Kelly Simmons (Washington, D.C. / Antonian) tied with Shipley for the team lead with three assists of her own and was the outright leader with nine rebounds.

Nelson came off the bench with nine points, hitting 3-of-5 from three-point range in her nine minutes on the court.

Coach Speak

"Great weekend to be a Together Tiger," said Assistant Coach Joe Shotland. "When it comes to conference weekend wins, I'm like Angelo from Point Break: 'Get me two!' I'm really excited for this team to keep getting better."
