#23 Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Colorado College to Open 2022-23 Season

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 23rd-ranked men's swimming & diving team opened up its season with a solid 140-103 win over Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference adversary Colorado College on Friday evening.

The Tiger men matched the women's team in earning victories in 11 of the 13 events that comprised tonight's meet. Trinity swept the diving events to start off the day, then won nine of the 11 swim events to earn the overall victory.

Konstantine Partalas (San Antonio, Texas / Reagan) edged out the Colorado College competition to sweep both the 1-meter (496.95) and 3-meter (304.75) diving events, setting the night's tone for Trinity.

Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood) earned a pair of individual wins as well as being a part of the two relay victories. Early won both the 100 (47.31) and 200 freestyle (1:43.01) races, while also serving as the lead leg on the winning 200 free relay team.

Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) was part of both winning relay teams, anchoring the 200 medley relay (1:35.95) and sprinting through the third leg of the 200 free relay (1:26.75). Kohl also won the 50 free individually with a time of 21.73 seconds.

Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas / Homeschool) and Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online Academy) both had individual wins and relay victories as well. Manifold won the 100 butterfly in 52.74 seconds, while Southwell was the 100 breaststroke gold medalist after finishing in 59.14 seconds. Maniforld anchored the 200 free relay and Southwell was the second of four swimmers in the 200 medley relay.

After also racing the leadoff of the 200 medley relay, Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) also won both the 100 backstroke (52.83) and was third in the 200 individual medley (2:01.99).

John Fontenot (Austin, Texas / St. Andrew's) was on both winning relay teams and was also third in the 100 fly (54.21). William Walker (Houston, Texas / Westside) finished second in the 100 fly (53.44) and the 500 free (4:59.07), as well as securing third in the 200 free (1:46.14) on Friday.

John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin) took top honors on the 200 IM (1:56.95), then finished as the runner-up in the 100 breast (59.53).

"Tonight's win was a total team effort from every one of the men against a tough Colorado College team," said Head Coach Cathleen Pruden. "There were gritty performances across the lineup. I'm really excited to see how this group of guys can develop in the next three months."

Up Next

As part of the 2022 Trinity University Alumni Weekend, both the Tiger men's and women's teams will host an Alumni Meet tomorrow morning. Trinity will be back in the pool for regular competition on Saturday, October 29, at the University of Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa, Texas.
