SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 19th-ranked men's swimming & diving team finished off the first day of action at the Tiger Invitational on Friday with a 60-point lead over NCAA II University of Texas-Permian Basin.
The Tigers scored a total of 328 points after the first of a three-day event that is hosted at the Alamo Heights High School Natatorium. UT-Permian Basin scored 288 points, followed by Southwestern University in third place with 226 points, NAIA Loyola University-New Orleans in fourth, and McMurry University in fifth.
Senior
Matteo Lanzara (Moraga, Calif. / Campolindo) and junior
Michael Kohl (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) led the way for Trinity with both individual and relay wins on Friday.
Lanzara broke the Tiger record with a time of 1:51.66 in the 200 individual medley, while also swimming leadoff on the 400 medley relay team that won with a time of 3:20.62 on Friday. Lanzara was joined by two other Trinity teammates in the top five finishers of the 200 IM.
Kohl was the top swimmer in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.34 seconds that vaults him up to second in the Trinity record book. He was one of four Tiger swimmers to finish in the top six in the event that turned out to be one of the team's best of the day. Kohl also swam a time of 49.41 in the 100 backstroke leg of the 400 medley relay team that finished second to Trinity's "A" relay team.
Junior
Nathaniel Early (Austin, Texas / Westwood) was part of both gold-medal relay teams for the Tigers on Friday, swimming third in the top 200 free relay of the day (1:22.28), and finishing as the anchor of the top 400 medley relay team of the day. Early also was third in the 50 free behind Kohl's first-place finish, finishing in 21.02 seconds to move up to fifth in Trinity's record book.
Sophomore
Caleb Manifold (Helotes, Texas / Homeschool) swam anchor on the 200 free relay and the third leg of the 400 medley relay to help Trinity to both victories in those events, while also finishing sixth in the 50 free with a time of 21.51 seconds. Senior
Nolan Anthony (Missouri City, Texas / Missouri City) was just ahead of Manifold in fifth place, notching a time of 21.15 that was good for a top-10 time in school history heading into this season.
Junior
Kendal Southwell (Rio Rancho, N.M. / Calvert Online Academy) was fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.48, while also swimming second for the winning 400 medley relay team.
First-year
William Walker (Houston, Texas / Westside) and senior
Omar Shahatit (Austin, Texas / Westlake) were fifth and sixth in the 500 free event, with Walker swimming a lifetime-best time of 4:42.91 and Shahatit coming in close behind at 4:48.08.
First-year
John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin) finished second only to Lanzara in the 200 IM on Friday, touching the pad in a time of 1:52.19.

Trinity continues the Tiger Invitational with the swimming prelims at 10:00 a.m., followed by the first diving events of the weekend at 1:30 p.m. The swimming finals are scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
