Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fifth-Ranked Tigers Blow Past LeTourneau With Strong Second Half

SAN ANTONIO – The fifth-ranked Trinity women's basketball team finished off its holiday weekend with a 93-55 win over LeTourneau University on Sunday evening.

The Tigers improved to 7-0 this season with the win, which was also a milestone win for Head Coach Cameron Hill. Coach Hill has won 228 career games at Trinity, which ties him with Becky Geyer for the most wins in school history.

Trinity dominated in the second half of the game, running away with a lopsided win that was just a seven-point margin at halftime (38-31).

Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) and Claire Hale (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) finished with 20 points each to lead all scorers. Robbins also led the Tigers with nine rebounds and tied for the team lead with four assists. Hale hit all six of her free throw attempts on her way to her second 20-point game of the season, despite playing just 18 minutes.

Trinity will open up Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, facing off against both Centenary College and the University of St. Thomas. The Tigers start the weekend against Centenary on Friday at 5:30 p.m., in Shreveport, Louisiana, then take on St. Thomas on Sunday at noon in Houston, Texas.

The Rundown
The Tigers led the entire game except for a 2-2 tie after both teams scored on their opening possessions. Trinity used a 6-0 over a 90-second stretch to pull in front 13-6, as Hale scored a pair of buckets in the sequence. LeTourneau bounced back with four quick points of its own to cut the lead down to just three points. The quarter went on like that for several possessions as Trinity never built a lead bigger than seven. The Yellow Jackets scored six unanswered points late in the quarter to cut the lead to just one, and Trinity led 24-22 after the first period of play.

The second quarter began with Trinity scoring 10 straight points to take a 12-point lead with just 6:24 left until the half. The Tiger offense sputtered the rest of the quarter, though, scoring just four more points. While the offense slowed down, the defense kept up the intensity and allowed just nine total points in the quarter. That allowed Trinity to stay in the lead, despite the scoring drought. The lead did dwindle to just three points as LeTourneau answered Trinity's 10-0 run with nine straight points of its own to make it a 34-31 game. Trinity scored the rest of its points in the quarter in the final 1:39 to make it a 38-31 game at the break.

The third quarter was Trinity's best of the game, scoring 29 total points and adding 14 more points to its lead. The teams traded baskets early in the quarter, then the Tigers put the game away with a 24-3 run that lasted just over five minutes and began with 19 unanswered points. By the end of it, Trinity led 66-38 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. LeTourneau was able to trim a few points off the lead by the end of the quarter, but the Tigers still held a commanding 67-46 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The lead ballooned to 30 points before the halfway point of the fourth quarter and a 17-1 run by the Tigers pushed the advantage to 38 points (87-49) with just under four minutes to go. Trinity wound up allowing just nine points in the quarter, equaling its best defensive effort of the second quarter. The lead went as high as 40 points at the end, before LeTourneau hit a pair of free throws with 2:05 left to finish off the scoring in the game.

Coach Speak
"We just played our fifth game in nine days," pointed out Coach Hill after the win. "Feels like an NBA schedule, but we don't take nights off. No load management – we just manage the load. Maverick was wrong: she hasn't lost that loving feeling because she doesn't lose. Go Tigers."

Numbers to Note
Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) was Trinity's only other player to score in double figures in the game, knocking down three three-pointers on her way to 11 points. She also led the team with five steals.

Addie Putnam (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Xavier College Prep) finished with eight points and eight rebounds, while Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Ore. / Valley Catholic) scored seven points and tied Robbins for the team lead with four assists.

Robbins set a new career-high in scoring for the second straight game this weekend, while Hale also tied her career-high that was set in the opening game of the season.

Up Next
Trinity will begin conference action next weekend against Centenary and St. Thomas. The Tigers face the Gents on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Sunday afternoon matchup with St. Thomas.
