Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO - The Trinity University Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Pacific Lutheran University. The Tigers dropped game one by a score of 16-6 and lost game two by a score of 4-0. TU is now 0-4 on the young season while PLU improves to 2-0. The Tigers fell behind early in both games and couldn't mount a comeback.
The Tigers found themselves down early after the Lutes exploded for eight runs in the first inning of game one. Trinity did get one run back in the bottom of the first first-year Jessica Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) blasted the Tiger's first homerun of the year. Lloyd's first career blast to left center made the score 8-1 in favor of PLU.
The Lutes continued spraying the ball all over the field and put up four more runs in the top of the second inning on three hits and one TU error. Trinity responded to the Lutes by plating five runs in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 12-6. Sophomore Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter) reached first base after a catcher's interference was called. Williams later advanced to third thanks to a double from senior Brianna Pena (La Porte, TX / La Porte) and scored on a wild pitch. First-year Jayla Arenas (Houston, Texas / Dobie) walked and moved into scoring position after a few wild pitches. The Houston native later scored on a single from senior Sammie Whitman (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis). Sophomore Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) then hit a two run slam to bring in Whitman to cut the Trinity deficit to six runs.
The Lutes added another run in the third and brought across three more to get out to a comfortable 16-6 lead in the fifth inning. The Tigers offense couldn't plate any more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the game.
In game two of the night, PLU scored two runs in the first and second inning to jump out to an early 4-0 lead. First-year Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) collected her first career hit in the second inning but was left stranded. Trinity threatened the Lutes by loading the bases with two outs but couldn't drive home any runs to cut into the deficit.
After giving up five hits and seven runs in her first outing, senior Cat Patterson (West Columbia, Texas / Brazosport Christian School) bounced back by coming in to throw five scoreless innings in relief of first-year pitcher Lanie Smith (Foxfield, Colo. / Regis Jesuit).
