The Rundown
Southwestern scored the first points of the game and held Trinity scoreless for nearly three minutes to start the first quarter. The Tigers finally got on the board with a three-pointer from Ackerman, who wound up with 12 of her 15 points in the opening period. The Pirates led 9-5 nearly halfway through the quarter, but Trinity heated up over the final six minutes of the period.
Trinity scored 21 unanswered points over a four-and-a-half minute stretch, starting with another Ackerman three-pointer. Ava Limonciello (Waltham, Mass. / St. Mark's School) also hit two shots from beyond the arc during the run, which gave the Tigers a commanding 26-9 lead with less than 90 seconds left in the first quarter. Ackerman hit her fourth three of the quarter with just under a minute remaining for an 18-point lead, but Southwestern scored the final basket to make it a 29-14 game after one.
The two teams traded scores for most of the second quarter, but neither put together much of a run until the end. Southwestern had cut the lead to 12 points with 2:24 remaining in the half, but Trinity scored the final nine points of the period to take a 50-29 halftime lead. Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) scored the last five points of that run in the final 41 seconds.
The third quarter was the best of the game for Southwestern, but it was also a 24-point period for Trinity. Shipley carried her strong first-half finish into the third quarter as well, scoring 11 points in the period for a total of 16 points over 11 minutes of game time.
The period began with five straight points for Southwestern, but five quick Trinity points erased that run and the lead was never less than 19 points after that. The Tigers still led by 21 points with under three minutes to go in the period when the home team scored nine of the next 11 points to put the game out of reach. Trinity took a 74-48 lead into the final period of the game.
Trinity went scoreless for nearly four minutes to start the fourth quarter, but the Tigers also held Southwestern to just four points over that span. Trinity's first points of the period sparked a 9-2 spurt in just 61 seconds to make it a 29-point lead.
Numbers to Note
Kelly Simmons (Washington, D.C. / Antonian) contributed four rebounds and a pair of assists, while fellow senior Carly Leong (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) had three points and two steals for Trinity.
Ackerman tied her career-best with five three-pointers made, finishing just two points shy of her career-high scoring total of 17.
Shipley led all scorers with 20 points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) was the fourth Tiger to reach double figures, hitting three three-pointers on her way to 17 total points. Milton also tied her career-high with a season-best eight rebounds and recorded five steals. Milton becomes just the fourth player in history to make 60 or more three-pointers in one season, and she passes two players to move up to second on the all-time list. She needs just two more made threes to break the Tiger record of 62 three-pointers made, set by Murphy Burns (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Heritage Hall) in 2012-13.
Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) tied with Shipley for the team lead of four assists each, while Robbins also added eight points, five rebounds, and a game-best six steals.
Tonight marked the eighth time this season that Trinity's defense forced 30 or more turnovers in a game, scoring 40 points off of 30 turnovers forced in the game. The Tigers scored 48 of their points in the paint and had a 24-point advantage down low.
Coach Speak
"Tom Hanks is a legend," said Head Coach Cameron Hill. "So many great movies, so many memorable quotes. To me, it all comes down to one line: 'There is no crying in baseball.' There is also no crying in basketball. Senior Night is always tough. But especially tough for Southwestern."
