Women's Hoops Blows Past Schreiner in SCAC Road Win

Box Score

KERRVILLE, Texas – The Tiger women's basketball team began its final week of the regular season with an 88-75 win in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Schreiner University on Tuesday evening. Trinity has now won 21 consecutive games, improving to 22-2 overall and 15-0 in SCAC play.

In a very balanced onslaught, there were eight different Tigers scoring seven or more points in the game. Hailey Coleman (Kansas City, Mo. / St. Teresa's Academy) led the Tigers with 15 points and 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She also had three steals and three blocks in the game, hitting 6-of-9 from the field.

The Tigers have already clinched the top seed at the SCAC Tournament that begins February 25 and will close out the regular season on Sunday, February 20, at the University of Dallas.

The Rundown

Trinity went nearly four minutes without a basket as Schreiner took an 8-1 lead early in the first quarter of play. The Tigers finally got their first field goal on a pair of layups to cut the deficit to just three points. Schreiner stayed in front though, and led 13-6 with 3:26 remaining.

That's when Trinity's offense came to life, scoring 11 straight points to take a 17-13 lead with less than 90 seconds to go. Mollee Priddy (Port Neches, Texas / Port Neches-Groves) and Carly Leong (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) scored four points each during the run. Schreiner scored the next seven to reclaim the lead, but Julia Ackerman (Orange County, Calif. / JSerra Prep) nailed a three in the final seconds to tie the game 20-20 after one period.

Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) opened the second quarter with a go-ahead three-pointer and the Tigers never trailed the rest of the half. Schreiner kept pace with the Tigers early on and trailed by just two with just under six minutes left in the half. Trinity went on a 15-5 run over the next three-plus minutes to take control of the game, leading 44-32 with 2:22 remaining. The lead only briefly dipped under 10 in the final seconds of the half, but Leong hit a pair of free throws to put the Tigers in front 47-36 at the break.

Schreiner got the first basket of the second half to trim the lead back into single digits, but Coleman and Ava Limonciello (Waltham, Mass. / St. Mark's School) combined for 13 points over the first 4:10 of the period and the Tigers led 60-48. Trinity pushed the lead as high as 15 points down the stretch, but Schreiner made a push at the end to cut it back to nine points in the final minute. Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) scored the final three points of the quarter, though, and Trinity led 69-57 heading into the fourth.

Trinity also scored seven of the first nine points to start the quarter, making it an overall run of 10-2, and giving the Tigers a 76-59 lead just over three minutes into the period. Schreiner was able to chip into the lead a little and had it down to 13 with just under five minutes left in the game. The Tiger defense held the home team scoreless over the next two-plus minutes, while also building the lead back to 19 with 2:21 remaining, and effectively sealing the win.

Numbers to Note

Shipley knocked down four of her six total shots on her way to 13 points in just 24 minutes, collecting four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Milton finished with 12 points and six boards, but her highlight was tying the school record for three-pointers in a season. She connected on her 62nd field goal from beyond the arc this year, tying the record set in 2012-13.

Emily Nelson (Sugar Land, Texas / Saint Agnes Academy) tied her career-high with 11 points off the bench, hitting 3-of-4 overall from the field and going 2-for-3 from three-point range.

Kelly Simmons (Washington, D.C. / Antonian) scored eight points to go with six rebounds, a game-high five assists, and three steals.

Leong also had eight points off the bench, while Limonciello and Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) chipped in with seven points each. Robbins also pulled down eight rebounds and dished out four assists.

Coach Speak

"Something about playing in Kerrville felt very Bull Durham," said Head Coach Cameron Hill. "In the first quarter, we were lollygaggers. In the second quarter, we met Annie. In the third quarter, we finally started listening to Crash. And in the fourth quarter, we made it to the show. On to the next one."
