#15 Trinity Edged by Babson in Weekend Series Finale

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 15th-ranked baseball team was edged by Babson College 4-2 in the weekend series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Babson (2-1) took two out of three games against the Tigers over the weekend, winning the weekend and evening the overall series at six wins each. Trinity won yesterday's slugfest 12-11 to even the series, following Babson's narrow 5-4 win in Friday's opener.

Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) drove in both of Trinity's runs in the game, while Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) stayed red-hot with a pair of hits that included his third double in the last two games.

Trinity falls to 3-3 on the season with the loss and will welcome in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for a four-game series this weekend. The Tigers and sixth-ranked Eagles begin the series on Thursday night, followed by a Friday doubleheader that starts at 3:00 p.m. The teams wrap the series at Wolff Stadium on Saturday morning.

The Rundown

Babson struck first with a run in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a two-out throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. Another two-out rally in the second plated two more scores for the Beavers, putting the visitors in front 3-0.

The Tigers were hitless until the fourth inning as Babson retired eight straight batters at one point early in the game. MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) broke that up with one out in the fourth, smashing a double down the left field line. Gore followed with a single to right and moved to second on the throw home that held Metz at third. After the Beavers got the second out of the inning, Schaub hit a flare into shallow right that escaped the diving glove of the Babson second baseman to drive in two runs, and the Tigers had cut the lead to 3-2.

A leadoff double to open the sixth eventually led to an insurance run for Babson, and the Tigers stranded Gore after his two-out double in the bottom of the inning. Schaub drew a leadoff walk in the seventh to bring the tying run to the plate, but a double play and a fly out to center ended the threat and Trinity still trailed 4-2.

Babson loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but first-year Jack Martinez (Corpus Christi / Ray) came on in relief and got a huge strikeout in his first collegiate action. Unfortunately, the Tigers went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings, and Babson held on for the win.

Numbers to Note

Samuel Conte (Boston, Mass. / Phillips Academy) went five-plus innings and recorded seven strikeouts, but took the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. He allowed just three earned runs on six hits over 24 batters faced in the game.

Garrett Aylor (Austin, Texas / Westlake) struck out four batters over two shutout innings, while Martinez finished the game by allowing just one hit and striking out two batters over the final 1.1 innings.
