Tigers Beat Schreiner for Record-Setting 18th Straight Win

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – It was a record-setting Tuesday night for the #20th-ranked Tiger women's basketball team, which exploded for a 122-75 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Schreiner University.

Trinity won its 18th straight game to break the school record for consecutive victories, while also setting a new school record for most total points in a game. The Tigers are now 19-2 overall and remain undefeated with a 12-0 mark in conference play.

Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) lit up the scoreboard for a career-high 33 points in the game, hitting 7-of-8 from beyond the arc to tie the Tiger record for three-pointers made in a game. She ties the record set by Danielle Hubenak (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) in 2008 and tied by Hubenak in January of 2011. Milton hit 12-for-17 overall from the field, adding four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

Hailey Coleman (Kansas City, Mo. / St. Teresa's Academy) also had a standout night, hitting 10-of-10 from the field on her way to 21 points. It is believed to be the most made field goals in school history without a missed shot. Coleman also filled up the stat sheet with eight rebounds, four assists, four blocked shots, and a pair of steals.

Trinity finishes its stretch of four games in five days tomorrow, hosting Texas Lutheran University in Calgaard Gym. The Tigers will honor their seniors in the regular season home finale against Southwestern University on Saturday evening.

The Rundown

Trinity missed its first three shots of the game and didn't score for nearly two minutes to open the first quarter of action. That didn't stop the Tigers from its best period of the night, finishing with 33 total points and a 13-point lead. After the first three misses, Trinity connected on an amazing 70% (14-of-20) from the field in the quarter.

Schreiner's last lead of the game was a 5-4 score with 7:33 to go, but a 10-0 run that lasted just over a minute put the home team in control for good. The visitors broke up the run with a couple of baskets on their next two possessions, but Trinity took a 10-point lead when Milton hit her second three of the quarter with just over five minutes remaining. The lead grew as high as 15 points as that three sparked a run of eight straight Tiger points. Schreiner drew within 11 in the final minute, but Carly Leong (Palo Alto, Calif. / Palo Alto) scored the quarter's final points to make it 33-20.

Milton hit 5-for-5 from the field and 3-of-3 from distance in the second quarter, netting 15 points overall in just seven minutes of action. Coleman, Julia Ackerman (Orange County, Calif. / JSerra Prep), and Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) scored the other 17 points combined for the Tigers.

The lead was just 11 points just a couple of minutes into the second period when Trinity poured in nine straight points to pull in front 49-29 with 5:14 left in the half. Ackerman nailed two threes during the run, prompting a Schreiner timeout. After that run was stopped by a visitor bucket, Trinity scored 10 of the next 12 to push the lead to 26 points less than two minutes later. Another 30-point quarter for the Tigers made it a 65-40 halftime lead, which is the most points scored in one half in school history.

Trinity was able to build a 30-point lead less than four minutes into the third quarter, and a 13-0 run in the middle of the period took the lead all the way to 82-45 with 4:44 left. Schreiner hit a three to break up the scoreless streak, but Milton responded with five straight Tiger points to go back in front by 39. By the end of the third period, Trinity held a 95-59 lead – and that was only after Schreiner hit a buzzer-beating layup.

Trinity's lead went to 40 just over a minute into the fourth, then Milton hit her record-tying seventh three-pointer shortly after that to put the Tigers over the century mark. The Tiger reserves pushed the advantage to 50 points with an 8-0 run late in the quarter, though Schreiner scored five of the final seven to account for the final score.

Numbers to Note

Ackerman went 3-for-4 from three-point range in tonight's win, which moves her into third place all-time for career three-pointers, passing Hubenak on the all-time list. Ackerman is also closing in on 300 career assists, needing just six more helpers to become the fifth player ever to reach the milestone.

Shipley connected on 8-of-12 from the field for an 18-point game, tying Milton for the team lead with four steals. She also posted a double-double with a career-high 10 assists in the game.

Leong came off the bench to score 13 points, giving Trinity four players in double figures. Leong hit 5-for-9 from the field and also dished out two assists.

Trinity shot an unbelievable 60.9% (14-for-23) from three-point range in tonight's game, as well as shooting 66.7% (50-for-75) overall. The Tigers forced 33 turnovers and held a 30-14 margin in fast break points. Trinity also controlled the paint with a 68-42 advantage down low.

Coach Speak

"Corndogs Jackie…for all of these people," exclaimed Head Coach Cameron Hill. "Jackie Moon was in a pickle because he had to feed a full arena. Me, I can afford seven corn dogs! We play again tomorrow…if anyone on campus is hungry."
