CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 8 Trinity University Men's Tennis swept its first day of the Stag-Hen Invitational Friday for the right to play in the event's championship Saturday morning.
The Tigers (10-3, 2-0 SCAC) defeated Bowdoin College (ME), 6-3, to open the day's action then battled a war of attrition with Friday's host No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (CA) to a 5-4 victory.
Cameron Goldstein (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) represented the fifth team point in each match, sealing the Friday sweep. The junior put together a pair of three-set victories from the sixth line in each match which led him to his second and third consecutive match-clinching performances including the 9-0 shutout of McMurry University last Saturday. Goldstein's recent play has vaulted him to a 5-0 record in singles thus far this season.
Cameron Krimbill (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain), NCAA III's seventh-ranked singles player, continued his undefeated start to the 2022 campaign in the first line against NCAA III competition, including a straight-sets victory over No. 17 Tristan Bradley of Bowdoin, 7-5, 6-2, which set the stage for Goldstein's first clinch of the day. The two-time All-American collected a second straight-sets victory, 6-4, 6-3, in the nightcap with the 19th-ranked Sagehens for a 10-0 record in division three play.
While the second and third lines of doubles each went 1-1 for the Tigers Friday, the nation's second-ranked doubles squad of Christian Settles (Claremont, Calif. / Claremont) and Hao Nguyen (Sugar Land, Texas / Strake Jesuit) provided some security in the early sessions with victories of 8-4 and 8-2, respectively, the latter came against the nation's 10th-ranked duo from Pomona-Pitzer. The Trinity pair stands at 10-3 overall this season, winners of five straight and eight of their last 10.
No. 8 Trinity Men's Tennis remains in Claremont, California overnight for the Stag-Hen Invitational finale at Noon CT where the Tigers will face the other half of the hosting duo, No. 4 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a de facto west region title fight.
The Tigers return to San Antonio March 22 to host No. 25 Kalamazoo College (MI) for the first of three-straight home matchups against more nationally-ranked opponents, followed by No. 2 University of Chicago and No. 20 University of Mary Washington (VA).
