#16 Trinity Baseball Blanked by Centenary in SCAC Series Opener

Box Score

SHREVEPORT, La. – Trinity's 16th-ranked baseball team was blanked 10-0 to open a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series at Centenary College on Friday night.

The Tigers fell to 10-7 overall with the team's first loss in league play for a 3-1 mark. Centenary is now 12-10 overall and evens its SCAC record at 2-2.

Trinity fell behind early and never got the bats going as the Tiger hitters were limited to just three total hits. Trinity had all three hits in the first five innings and the only baserunner after that came on a leadoff walk in the eighth.

The two teams continue the SCAC series with a pair of games tomorrow, with Centenary needing just one win to clinch its first regular season series win against the Tigers since 2018.

The Rundown

Centenary got on the board early with two walks and an error to take a 1-0 lead that proved to be all the scoring needed. Trinity got two of its three hits in the first two innings and the second was erased on a double play to end the second inning. The Gents carried that into the bottom half of the inning, plating three runs on two hits and another Tiger error to make it 4-0 after two.

A leadoff triple in the fourth led to another Centenary run and a 5-0 advantage, then scored again on a two-out infield single in the sixth. Three more runs on three hits in the seventh nearly ended the game in the seventh as the Gents led 9-0. Centenary was able to finish the game early in the eighth, using a leadoff walk and a stolen base to set up the game-ending hit.

Numbers to Note

Corey Cater (Sacramento, Calif. / Valley Christian Academy) made his 53rd overall appearance in today's game and pitched into the sixth inning as the starter. He recorded five strikeouts to improve to 16th on Trinity's all-time list with 184 in his career. He is also tied for 13th in school history in career games pitched.

Trinity was shut out for the first time since a 2019 loss to Texas Lutheran, as well as getting blanked for the first time since 2018 in the series with Centenary.

Trinity had won six of the previous seven meetings in the series and is now 28-19 against the Gents in the SCAC era (since 1992). This marks the worst loss for the Tigers in the series since a 13-3 defeat in 2017.

Up Next

Trinity and Centenary will conclude the series with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m.
