SAN ANTONIO - On the first hot day of 2022, No. 5 Trinity University Men's Tennis finished off its week of nationally-ranked opponents with a 6-3 victory over No. 22 University of Mary Washington at the Hill Tennis Stadium.
The Tigers (12-5) collected a 2-1 doubles advantage then posted back-to-back wins in the top two lines of singles for a 4-2 advantage at the four-court facility, leaving junior Cameron Goldstein (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) and first-year Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep) in charge of the final point from lines five and six. Goldstein collected the clincher, 6-3, 6-3, just ahead of the Tiger rookie's 7-4 second-set tiebreaker.
Juniors Alessio Azzalini (Rome, Italy / Istituto Visconti) and Cal Hunter (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) knocked off the nation's 18th-ranked duo from Mary Washington, 8-5, in line three just after Goldstein and senior Wilson Hamilton (Austin, Texas / ATA Prep) posted their 8-4 victory in the second line.
All of the top three lines of singles required a third set Saturday in the first wave of individual play. Azzalini was the first victorious Tiger as he overcame a first-set loss, and a 5-1 second-set deficit to rally through a 7-1 tiebreaker then a commaning 6-2 third-set mark.
Senior Cameron Krimbill (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) faced the nation's ninth-ranked singles player in line one but collected a pair of 6-4 sets on either side of a 6-3 second-set defeat for a strong performance in a top-ten matchup.
As the middle of the lineup faded, the 4-3 match score in favor of Trinity presented itself to the fifth and sixth lines, both of which secured in the Tigers' victory between the play of Goldstein and Liao.
No. 5 Trinity Men's Tennis face a pair of NCAA I opponents next weekend, hosting Nicholls State University (LA) Friday before visiting Abilene Christian University on Sunday, April 3.
