Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO – The 22nd-ranked Tiger baseball team swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader to open a weekend series against the University of Dallas on Saturday.
Trinity improved its record to 15-7 this season with the two wins, which includes a 7-1 record in conference play. The Tigers won 12-0 in the opening game, then took a 13-3 win in the second to enact the run-rule in both contests.
A pair of three-run homers highlighted the offensive output in the opening game, while Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / J.B. Alexander) tossed a complete-game shutout to earn the win. Chavana improved to 4-1 this season with the victory, allowing just two hits and striking out 10 batters. Samuel Conte (Boston, Mass. / Phillips Academy) took the win in game two, striking out six batters and giving up just two hits over four shutout innings.
Nathan Braulick (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) and Michael Montrezza (Lost Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) had three hits each in game two, while Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) and Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) both hit the home runs in the opener. Gore and Jack Vonderhaar (Woodinville, Wash. / Redmond) drove in three runs each, while Holloway picked up four RBI in the game.
Trinity and Dallas wrap up the series with a single game tomorrow afternoon, followed by another home contest on Tuesday against Our Lady of the Lake University. Today's doubleheader kicked off an eight-game home stand for the Tigers.
The Rundown: Game One
The Tigers left the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning and both teams missed early chances to get on the board. Trinity scored three runs in the fourth to break up the shutout, putting together a two-out rally with a hit batter and a walk. Holloway then hit a three-run shot to the opposite field, narrowly clearing the fence to put Trinity up 3-0.
The first two batters of the fifth inning were also hit by pitches to put two runners on for Gore, and he delivered a three-run homer to left-center that narrowly missed clanging off the scoreboard. Vonderhaar also picked up a run-scoring single later in the inning and Trinity led 7-0 after five.
The sixth turned out to be Trinity's last turn at bat as the Tiger offense added five more runs on three hits to set up the run rule. MJ Metz (San Diego, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) got it all started with a sacrifice fly to left-center, then another run came in on a wild pitch to make it 9-0. Vonderhaar laced a two-run triple down the right field line to push the lead to double digits, then Holloway doubled home Vonderhaar to finish the scoring.
The Rundown: Game Two
Trinity's bats carried the scoring momentum into the second game, opening up the second half of the doubleheader with three runs – all of which scored on wild pitches. Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) was hit by a pitch to start things off, marking the third time he was hit on the day, then came around to score the first run of the game.
The second inning was the best of the day for the Tiger offense, hammering out seven runs on seven hits to take a 10-0 lead early in the game. Montrezza opened the inning with a sharp single, then stole a base and scored on a single to left off the bat of Harris. After an infield single by Gore, Metz doubled in two more runs to make it a 6-0 Trinity lead. Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) followed with an RBI single, then Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) doubled to score two more runners after a two-out walk. Montrezza then hit his second double of the day to bring in Pettit for the 10th run of the game.
Trinity got two more runs with another two-out rally in the fourth. Montrezza walked after the first two batters of the inning were retired, then Harris roped a single into left field. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Braulick delivered a two-run single to right-center to put the Tigers in front 12-0.
Dallas finally strung some hits together in the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits to make it a 12-3 game heading to the bottom of the inning. A leadoff double from Montrezza eventually led to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Korson Hastings (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) that put the run rule back in play with a 13-3 Trinity lead. The Crusaders had one final shot to keep the game going with a leadoff single in the seventh, but Trinity was able to finish off the win.
Numbers to Note
Trinity improves to 46-5 in the SCAC era (since 1992) against Dallas, upping its winning streak in the series to 23 straight games. The Tigers have won 35 of the last 36 meetings, with an extra-inning loss in 2014 being the only hiccup during that stretch.
Today's shutout for Chavana was the first complete game and the first shutout of his career. It also marks the first complete-game shutout for a Tiger pitcher since Dylan McGee tossed a seven-inning no-hitter against Austin College in April of 2017.
Vonderhaar went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored in game one.
Holloway had a double and a homer in the opener, finishing with four RBI and a run scored.
Harris finished with three hits and five runs scored as the leadoff man in the lineup in both games today, reaching base six times in eight plate appearances.
Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) and Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) also scored two runs each in the first game.
Metz scored twice and drove in two more runs in the second game, while Wisniewski had two runs scored and Pettit also had two RBI. Wisniewski scored his 100th career run during today's doubleheader.
Braulick went 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored, while Montrezza was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI.
