#22 Tigers Wraps up SCAC Weekend Series Sweep of Dallas

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 22nd-ranked baseball team finished off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series sweep by defeating the University of Dallas 12-4 on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers improved to 16-7 overall and 8-1 in SCAC play with the win, which ties Trinity atop the SCAC standings. Trinity scored seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away for the win, though Dallas had fought back to within a run at 5-4 in the fifth.

Harrison Durow (Dallas, Texas / Lovejoy) improved to 3-0 this season after coming on in relief in the fifth. Durow finished out the game allowing just one hit over 4.2 shutout innings, striking out eight batters. Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Tanner Haney (Waco, Texas / Waco) notched a pair of hits and a team-best three RBI.

Trinity will take its typical Tuesday break from SCAC play this week by hosting Our Lady of the Lake University. The Tigers are back to conference action this weekend as the team will host the University of St. Thomas in a three-game series that begins on Friday night.

The Rundown

Dallas took its first lead of the series in the top of the third inning, loading the bases with two walks and a bunt single that led to a pair of scores. Trinity had stranded two runners on in both the first and second without scoring, but the Tigers got going in the third after falling behind.

Trinity also loaded the bases with the first three batters, getting hit by a pitch, drawing a walk, then reaching on a bunt single down the third base line. Jack Wisniewski (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) then tied the game with a single to right field to score two runs, and a throwing error on the play brought in the go-ahead run. Jack Vonderhaar (Woodinville, Wash. / Redmond) knocked in the last run of the inning on a ground out, making it 4-2 Tigers after three.

Dallas got one of the runs back after a leadoff double came around to score, but Trinity scored again to make it 5-3. Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) got things started with a single to right field, then eventually came around to score on three wild pitches. The Crusaders once again rallied with a run in the fifth, using a one-out walk to squeak in another run to make it 5-4.

Durow was able to slow the Dallas bats once he came in during the fifth, as a ninth-inning single was the only hit allowed. By that time, the Tiger offense had put the game away with a flurry of runs over its last two at-bats.

The scoring started in the seventh as Brian Schaub (Hatfield, Pa. / La Salle College HS) and Vonderhaar hit back-to-back solo homers to start the inning, putting Trinity in front 7-4. The inning continued with a hit from Pettit and Trinity loaded the bases with a walk and a hit batter. Haney then delivered a two-run single to center and the lead was up to 9-4 with just two innings remaining.

Schaub got the eighth inning started with a leadoff double, then Pettit smashed a two-run homer to put an exclamation point on his afternoon. Austin Davison (Park City, Utah / Rowland Hall) kept the inning going with a two-out triple to right-center, which was followed by another RBI single from Haney to make it a 12-4 Tiger advantage.

Numbers to Note

Trinity has now won 24 consecutive games in the series against Dallas, improving to 47-5 against the Crusaders. The Tigers have won 36 of the previous 37 meetings.

Schaub went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, including his team-leading fifth home run of the season. Wisniewski and Vonderhaar both drove in a pair of runs, while Gore scored twice.
