GEORGETOWN, Texas – No. 2/3 Trinity University Women's Basketball posted a program-record 42 points in the opening quarter of Saturday night's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference visit to Southwestern University as it finished out to a 125-89 tally.
The Tigers' (17-0, 8-0 SCAC) first-quarter blow came without a double-digit scorer through the first 10 minutes, though senior
Ashlyn Milton (Amarillo, Texas / Amarillo) led a quartet with six-plus points with eight, followed by fellow seniors
Claire Hale (San Antonio, Texas / Brandeis) and
Maggie Shipley (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) and sophomore
Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Ore. / Valley Catholic), each with six.
Napoli remained atop Trinity's scoring column with 24 points with a six-of-nine mark from three-point range. The transfer-sophomore posted her first 20-point outing at Texas Lutheran last night and came one point shy of her career-high 25 points set in her first-year season at Pacific Lutheran University.
Milton joined Napoli with 21 points on a similar five-of-seven from beyond the arc, eight of 11 attempts from the field overall. Shipley and Hale each crossed the double-digit line with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Sophomore
Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) edged out Shipley as the fourth double-digit scorer as she reached her 10
th and final point with six-and-a-half to go.
Napoli also led five players with three or more steals as the only player to collect a fourth. Hale, junior
Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano), sophomore
A'Nnika Saenz (Edinburg, Texas / Edinburg) and first-year
Jailyn Martin (Ashburn, Va. / Virginia Academy) each posted three steals while all played between 11 and 14 minutes.
Trinity collected 27 steals in the contest, the second-most of any game this season. Six of the team's seven highest outputs in the category have come on the road this season, three of which resulted in 100-plus points on the opposite end. The Tigers also forced 37 turnovers, marking the 10
th matchup with at least 30 in the category.
The Tigers logged their largest lead with one final double-up of the Pirates, 102-51, with nearly 14 minutes remaining in Saturday's SCAC matchup.
Coach Speak
"I've always been a big fan of Michael Jackson's music," Head Coach
Cameron Hill began. "Coming into this game felt a little like
Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' but after the first quarter we felt like some
Smooth Criminals."
"The press was fire: they couldn't
Beat It," Hill continued. "All I said at halftime was
Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough."
"It's
Human Nature to enjoy winning on the road," Hill concluded. "Although it wasn't a
Thriller, I can say with complete confidence: We
Bad!"
