#11 Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Year at Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas – The 11th-ranked Tiger men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season with a 2-0 defeat in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play at Texas Lutheran University on Sunday afternoon.

Trinity (6-1-2, 1-1-0 SCAC) splits its opening weekend of SCAC action with today's loss, following Friday night's 4-0 win over Southwestern University (TX). Today's loss marks the first time the Tigers have been beaten by the Bulldogs since the teams met in SCAC Tournament in 2019. It's also the first regular season loss for Trinity in the series between the two conference rivals since 2016.

The Tigers held an 8-3 edge in total shots in the first half and Trinity's defense didn't allow a shot by Texas Lutheran until the 40th minute. Half of Trinity's shots were on goal, but the game remained scoreless as the clock wound towards the end of the period.

In that final minute of the half, Texas Lutheran found an opening with a deep pass into the Trinity zone, and the Tigers stopped the play with a foul that resulted in a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity. The ensuing free kick turned into a 1-0 lead for Texas Lutheran with less than a minute to go before the break.

The shot count was much closer in the second, though TLU held a 7-6 edge overall in the final 45 minutes. However, Trinity did produce a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks and forced two more saves by Texas Lutheran in that final period. The Bulldogs stopped a Trinity attack late in the game and quickly countered to try and put the game out of reach. Texas Lutheran did just that with another goal in the 82nd minute to finish off the scoring and seal the win.

Trinity will resume SCAC play next weekend, coming back to McGinlay Field for games against the University of Dallas and Austin College. The Tigers face Dallas on Friday night at 8:00 p.m., followed by a 2:00 p.m. matchup with Austin College on Sunday afternoon.
