No. 11 Tiger Volleyball Sweeps TLU In Final Home Game

SAN ANTONIO - No. 11 Tiger Volleyball remains undefeated with a sweep over Texas Lutheran on Saturday afternoon.

The Rundown

This 1 versus 2 matchup got started with Maddie Fate (Croton on Hudson, New York / Croton Harmon) getting the first kill for the Tigers. The Bulldogs would tie the score up 7-7 early, but the Tigers would put down five points in a row to take a 12-7 lead. The Bulldogs would try to make a stand but the Tigers were ready to rock n' roll. In their final match in Calgaard Gym, fifth-years Nadia Kern (El Paso, Texas / Montwood) and Brette Thornton (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) would put in crucial points for the Tigers in set one. Thornton would put the ball down to give Kern the serve, Kern would then put in back-to-back service aces to bring the score 20-13. Fate would put the final point in for the Tigers to give them the set 25-19.

The Tiger offense was locked in for set two, as they jumped out to a huge 9-4 lead. The Bulldogs would battle to bring the lead to within three, but head coach Julie Jenkins would bring in her lightning rod in sophomore setter Jozie Dhayer (Houston, Texas / Summer Creek). Dhayer was ready to extend the Tiger lead immediately when she aced the Bulldogs. Dhayer would then set three different Tigers who all got kills, and the Tiger lead was grown to seven. Senior Carley Broekhuizen (Kalamazoo, Michigan / Kalamazoo Christian) would put the ball away to give the Tigers the set 25-19.

The third set was a back and forth battle between the Bulldogs and Tigers. The Bulldogs would grab a four-point lead early in the set. The Tigers showed their heart and clawed all the way back to bring the score to 16 all. Later on, the Bulldogs would get their lead back by scoring three unanswered points to let the scoreboard show 20-17. The momentum changed in Calgaard Gym when first year Connelley McWilliams (Austin, Texas / St. Michaels) turned around a laser shot from the Bulldogs to bring the Tigers to within one. At that point, it was time for a Tiger to have her senior moment. The last three kills for the Tigers would be scored by fifth-year Brette Thornton, with the last one ending the set and the match. The Tigers would win by a score of 25-23.

We could not forget to mention senior Mackenzie Logan (Calgary, Canada / Bishop Carroll), who led the Tigers in kills with 15. Fifth-year Marisa Amarino (Calabasas, California / Notre Dame Prep) would collect 19 assists in the match. Kern would lead the Tigers defensively with 24 digs.
