Â
Game One - Trinity 3, Dallas 0
Â
The Tigers would get the early game on Friday, with the first serve getting tossed in the air at 11:00 AM. However, the Tigers were still ready to play. First-year
Connelley McWilliams (Austin, Texas / St. Michaels) would get the scoring started for the Tigers. For a brief minute, the Tigers and Crusaders were trading blows and both teams were trying to build a lead. The Tigers would go on a three-point swing capped off by a
Cassidy MacLean (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands) service ace that would bring the score to 11-6 in favor of the Tigers. Then, it was time for senior
Mackenzie Logan (Calgary, Canada / Bishop Carroll) to get in on the action. She would score three of the next four Tiger points to put the Tigers within five points of winning the first set.
Maddie Fate (Croton on Hudson, New York / Croton Harmon) would show why she is ranked top in the country in hitting percentage when she slammed a ball to the floor to give the Tigers the set 25-16.
Â
The second set would start differently, with the Crusaders going up 3-0 early. The Tigers wouldn't back down. First-year
Lauren McCarthy (Scottsdale, Arizona / Horizon) would bring the score to even at 4 -4. The Tigers and Crusaders would battle once more trying to grab the lead. The back-and-forth would go all the way until it was 12-12. Then the Tigers would start to pull away. A few points later, the Tigers would score five points in a row to put the score at 23-18. Then the Crusaders would go on a huge four-point run to cut the lead to one. The Tigers and Crusaders would need to go into extra points as the score would be 25 all. The Crusaders would make a crucial attacking error and bring
Brette Thornton (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) to the service line. Just like it has all season, good things happen when Thornton is serving. The Crusaders would have another miscue and the Tigers would win the set 27-25 and take a 2-0 lead.Â
Â
In the third set, the Tigers poured it on. They would jump out to a huge 8-3 lead. The Crusaders tried to mount a comeback, but the Tigers pounced right back. The Tigers would score seven points in a row to break the game open 15-7. The Crusaders would sprinkle in points, but the Tigers 10-4 run would obliterate the Crusaders with the final score being 25-11, the second-largest margin of victory this season for the Tigers. Overall, Logan would lead the Tigers offensively with 18 kills on an absurd .548 hitting percentage. Defensively it would be sophomore
Jozie Dhayer (Houston, Texas / Summer Creek) who would lead the Tigers with 11 digs.
Â
Game Two - Trinity , Austin College
Â
The Tigers had a short break before beginning game two of the day. Sophomore
Reagan Whatley (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands) would get this match started with a kill. The Tigers would go on to take a big 7-2 lead but the Roos would quickly tie it up with a 6-1 run that brought the score to 8-8. Both teams would try to pull away, but the other would make a multi-point run to bring the score back to even. However, the first and fifth-year duo of
Courtney Pope (New Braunfels, Texas / Canyon) and
Brette Thornton would put the team on their back towards the end of the set. Of the last five points for the Tigers, Thornton and Pope would have four of them. Pope would strike down a ball with lightning precision to give the Tigers the set, 25-21.
Â
The second set would be the opposite start. The Roos would come out hot offensively and have a 2-6 lead. The Tigers would tie the game at 9 apiece but the Roos would re-extend their lead to 11-16. Just when
Nadia Kern (El Paso, Texas / Montwood) stepped to the service line, the Tigers got to work. The Tigers would score five points to bring the set back to even. The seesaw battle would continue as the Tigers would score, then the Roos, then the Tigers, it was a battle. The two teams would jump into extra points and the Roos would take the set 25-27 and tie the match.Â
Â
Set three would be a trade of points up until the Roos scored four points in a row to take a 9-12 lead. However, Coach Jenkins would put in a well-placed timeout and tell her team just the right thing. The Tigers would explode and go on a 7-2 run to grab the lead 17-16. Again, the two teams would do their best to establish any type of a lead, but then the Roos would take the eventual set point. However, the Tigers dug deep and scored three unanswered to give themselves a set point. The Tigers would give the ball to their workhorse,
Mackenzie Logan, and she would put the set away and the Tigers would erupt. Set would go to the Tigers 26-24.
Â
The fourth set saw the Roos jump out to a huge 3-13 lead. Logan, Whatley, and Thornton would try to bring the Tigers back. The Tigers would slowly close the gap throughout the set, bringing the lead all the way down to four points. However, the Roos would take the set 21-25, sending the game to a coveted fifth set.
Â
The fifth set would get started with a
Maddie Fate kill. The Tigers were determined to keep their undefeated streak alive. When the two teams switched sides, the Tigers were up 8-6. The Tigers would score the next three points and open up the lead to 11-6. The Roos would fight hard but they would make a crucial mistake by giving Fate a happy birthday ball, and she would put it right back to the floor, bringing the game to match point. The Tiger block would cause an attack error by the Roos to give the set and match to the Tigers by a score of 15-12.Â
Â
Logan would again lead the Tigers with 21 kills. Thornton would carry the Tigers offensively with 16 kills on a .412 hitting percentage. Defensively, it would be Kern with 20 digs.Â
