Women's Soccer Finishes Regular Season With Shutout Victory

Story Links

SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity women's soccer team closed out its regular season schedule with a 3-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Schreiner University on Friday night.

The Tigers finished off the 2023 conference schedule unbeaten with a record of 7-0-0 in SCAC play, while also improving their overall mark to 10-4-2 this season. The Mountaineers fell to 2-11-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference with the loss. Trinity recorded its seventh shutout during its current eight-game winning streak, holding Schreiner to zero shots in the game.

Prior to the game, Trinity women's soccer honored its eight seniors who played in their final regular season home games: Dabney Moore (Nashville, Tenn. / University School of Nashville), Josephine McCray (Fairway, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East), Reese Wallace (Oak Park, Calif. / Oak Park), Emily Hayes (Allen, Texas / Allen), Emma Everts (Ft. Worth, Texas / Ponderosa), Kyra Stafford (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian), Tedi Del Prete (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian), and Bailey Meyer (Southlake, Texas / Carroll). The Tigers also honored junior captain Meredith McAlester (Norman, Okla. / Norman North), who has also completed her playing days with the team due to injuries.

Trinity finished with 25 total shots, split almost evenly between the two halves. Everts had two of the first three attempts for the Tigers, including one off the cross bar in the 12th minute of play. Junior Taylor Campbell (Edinburg, Texas / Robert Vela) got the first scoring play going late in the 19th minute, beginning with her throw-in deep in Schreiner's defensive zone. After throwing the ball in, Campbell got the immediate return pass and beat her defender to the end line. Just as she reached the line, she cut back and turned towards to box to find sophomore Hanna Khan (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) just inside the top of the box. Khan then ripped a shot past the diving keeper for the eventual game-winner early in the 20th minute.

The second goal of the game was a fitting one for Senior Night, as three seniors combined for the score that came less than 10 minutes after the first. Everts picked up the ball just outside the center circle and quickly played it to Stafford down the right side of the field. Stafford cut in towards the box before slashing a low cross that got past two Tiger players before finding Hayes at the back post for a 2-0 Trinity lead with just over 16 minutes left in the first half. Trinity had five more on-target shots to close out the half, but the score remained 2-0 at the break.

Hayes nearly had her second goal of the game in the opening moments of the second half, hitting the post with the third shot of the period. Sophomore Maya Ozymy (Dallas, Texas / Coppell) eventually finished off the scoring with a goal in the 89th minute, scoring a header on a corner kick off the foot of first-year Kayla Boven (Katy, Texas / Tompkins). Del Prete nearly capped the night for the seniors with a goal in the final minute, but her attempt went just wide, and the game ended 3-0.

Khan's goal was her fifth of the season and her second game-winner for the Tigers. Stafford and Campbell both collected their third assists of the year, while Hayes and Ozymy both notched their third goals of the season. Everts scored her first assist of 2023, while Boven picked up her second.

Junior goalkeeper Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview) recorded her fifth solo shutout of the season.

Trinity will be the top seed at the SCAC Tournament, held next weekend in Houston, Texas. The bracket is already set for the tournament and the Tigers will begin play against the University of Dallas on Friday, November 3, at Noon.
