Preview - Tigers vs Tigers
Â
The Tigers will take on the Tigers of Sewanee in a road game with a noon kickoff. The Tigers are 27-4 against Sewanee since their first game in 1974. In the 2022 matchup, the Tigers decimated Sewanee by a score of 38-0.Â
Â
Offense: The Tigers were sound offensively, and although some penalties hurt them late in the game, the Tigers still put up 63 points. This marks the second week in a row that the Tiger offense has put up more than 50 points. The Tigers were led by Horn at quarterback. In the backfield,
Legend Grigsby (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek) would add a touchdown on 61 yards rushing. Also,
Johnny Milo (The Woodlands, Texas / Caney Creek) would find the end zone twice on seven carries. Senior
Carter Self (North Richland Hills, Texas / Birdville) would have a standout game, collecting four receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown. Sewanee relies heavily on their running game. Sewanee will be led by a duo of quarterbacks. Including freshman Jacorin Thomas and junior Jeremiah Young. Both quarterbacks average less than 100 yards passing on the season. The gunslingers will try to get the ball to freshman wide receiver Dyer Barnes who accounts for about a third of Sewanee's receiving yards. Offensively, Sewanee seems like a one-trick pony while the Tigers are diverse in their ways of attacking defenses.
Â
Defense: The defense was stellar in the game against Millsaps, only allowing 79 yards of total offense, the least amount of yards gained in the Coach Urban era.
John Kohl McAdams (New Berlin, Texas / McCallie School (TN)) led the Tigers with four total tackles.
Caleb Harmel (Burton, Texas / Burton) and
Jacob Munoz (Cedar Park, Texas / Cedar Park) would be all over the Millsaps backfield, collecting 5 tackles for loss between the two of them. Overall, the Tiger front seven would acquire 13 tackles for loss and 5 sacks in the game. For Sewanee, they are led by junior linebacker Keegan Glaze. Glaze leads Sewanee with 72 total tackles.Â
Â
Special Teams: Senior kicker
Tyler Huettel (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) would go 9-9 on extra point attempts while also collecting three touchbacks on his kickoffs. Huettel also collected his first career tackle. Punter
Eli Gehman (Cedar Park, Texas / Leander) would make the most of his opportunities by booting a 50-yard punt and also pinning the Majors inside the 20-yard line on another punt. The Tiger punt returners were immaculate with
Will Taylor (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) notching 119 yards and
Cam Herron (Abilene, Texas / Cooper) cruising for 90 total yards. For Sewanee, they have an all-around kicker in junior Jack Satterfield. The junior is 5-10 on field goals for the season, with a 46-yard field goal under his belt. However, he will allow the Tiger return team to get in on the action as he has only sent 4 of his 35 kicks out of the back of the end zone. On the return side, Sewanee has struggled, only averaging about 11 yards per return and about 19 yards per kick return. Â
Â
Keys To The Game
Â
Tiger Front Seven: With the overwhelming success of last week, the Tiger front-seven will need to have another great game stopping the run. The Tigers will key in on quarterback Jacorin Thomas who accounts for almost half of Sewanee's rushing yards. It has the potential for the Tiger defensive line as Sewanee will sport an all-sophomore offensive line. It will also be crucial for Harmel and
James Ogunrin (Katy, Texas / Episcopal) to key in on the quarterback run.Â
Â
Battle In the Trenches: The Tiger offensive line will have their hands full with fifth-year defensive lineman Quinn Johnson. Johnson has amassed 17.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks on the year. Also, the Sewanee defense leads the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) in sacks on the year with 31 and is second in interceptions with 8. However, Sewanee has the second-worst rushing defense in the conference, so look for the Tigers to keep the ball on the ground to set up the play-action pass.Â
