Trinity Football Features 22 Players Earning All-SAA Honors

ATLANTA – The No. 4/6 Trinity University football team had 22 players earn All-Southern Athletic Association recognition this season, led by three Tigers winning Player of the Year honors for the three-time defending conference champions.

Tucker Horn (Graham, Texas / Graham) earned the SAA Offensive Player of the Week award for the third consecutive season, becoming the first player in conference history to do so. He is one of just two football players in SAA history to win any of the superlative awards three times. Horn is a three-time First Team All-SAA selection who began the year as a Second Team Preseason All-America honoree. He has also earned All-Region honors in 2021 (First Team) and 2022 (Second Team). Horn has passed for more than 2,600 yards and 28 touchdowns this season and is on pace to break both the single season and career records for both QB efficiency rating and completion percentage.

Caleb Harmel (Burton, Texas / Burton) was named the SAA Defensive Player of the Year for the second time in his career, having also received the honor after the 2021 season. Harmel is a two-time All-American, who earned American Football Coaches Association and D3football.com First Team recognition last year. He was also a Fourth Team All-America choice by D3football.com in 2021. Harmel has been on the D3football.com Preseason All-America First Team each of the past two seasons. He has been chosen for the All-SAA teams four times in his career – including three times on the First Team. Harmel leads Trinity with 64 tackles and three interceptions, recording 13.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks on the year.

Tyler Huettel (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) is having a breakout year in his first as Trinity's starting kicker, earning himself SAA Special Teams Player of the Year and First Team All-SAA honors. This is Huettel's first All-SAA selection, while also earning First Team All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors while at St. Olaf College (MN) in 2021. Huettel was named an All-American punter by D3football.com (First Team), the Associated Press (First Team), and the AFCA (Second Team) in 2021. This year, Huettel has kicked 10 field goals and connected on 58-of-59 extra-point attempts for the Tigers. He tied Trinity's all-time record with a 52-yard field goal in the team's road win over Berry College (GA), which turned out to be the de facto SAA Championship game.

Joining Horn and Huettel on the All-SAA First Team offense were running back Legend Grigsby (Houston, Texas / Cypress Creek), wide receivers Ryan Merrifield (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and Cole Monago (Houston, Texas / Klein Cain), and offensive linemen Caleb Bayer (Grandview, Texas / Grandview) and John Hughes (Cypress, Texas / Bridgeland). Grigsby and Monago earned their first All-SAA honors, while Bayer, Merrifield, and Hughes have been selected multiple times. Hughes was also a First Team All-SAA performer in 2021, while also earning D3football.com First Team All-Region honors that year. He was a D3football.com Preseason All-American in 2022. Merrifield has now been voted to the All-SAA teams three times in his career – including First Team honors in 2022 and 2023. Bayer was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-SAA player last year.

Along with Harmel, Trinity had five other defensive players chosen for the First Team All-SAA awards. Mac Douglas (Fairhope, Ala. / Bayside Academy) and Jacob Munoz (Cedar Park, Texas / Cedar Park) are both two-time All-SAA performers, as both were Second Team All-SAA last season. Casey Hampton (Houston, Texas / Westbury Christian) was also recognized for the second time in his career, but the first time on the First Team. Trey King (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) is now a two-time First Team All-SAA selection, while also earning Second Team accolades in 2021. King was also a D3football.com First Team All-Region choice last year. James Ogunrin (Katy, Texas / Episcopal) was honored on the All-SAA team for the fourth time in his career, having made the First Team each of the last three seasons.

Wide receiver Caleb Crawford (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) was joined by offensive linemen Santi Bohlmann (Katy, Texas / Tompkins) and Conner Keele (Lampasas, Texas / Lampasas) on the All-SAA Second Team. Crawford and Keele were both picked as Honorable Mention All-SAA last year, while Bohlmann was honored for the first time in his career.

The Tigers had six more players earn All-SAA Honorable Mention for the 2023 season. Defensive backs Ryan Arnold (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and Quinn McDermott (Fairview, Texas / Lovejoy) both picked up their first All-SAA recognition. Defensive lineman Carson Byrd (Waco, Texas / Midway) has been Honorable Mention each of the past two years, while punter Eli Gehman (Cedar Park, Texas / Leander) was a Second Team choice in 2021 and also earned Honorable Mention status for the second straight year. Winston Hutchison (Round Rock, Texas / McNeil) was named to the All-SAA Second Team in 2021, while garnering Honorable Mention status this season. Harris Good (Ft. Worth, Texas / Paschal) is a four-time All-SAA selection who was a First Teamer each of the past two seasons.

Trinity is led by Head Coach Jerheme Urban who has led the team to four SAA Championships in the past five years, including the last three consecutively. He has led the Tigers to three straight appearances in the NCAA Playoffs and will march the team to battle in the NCAA Second Round this weekend against defending NCAA III champion North Central College. Trinity defeated Hardin-Simmons University 20-6 last weekend to advance to this weekend's matchup.
