No. 13 Men’s Tennis Posts Strong Finish Against Tornados

SAN ANTONIO – No. 13 Trinity University Men's Tennis hosted Concordia University (TX) for their first NCAA III matchup of the 2023 spring season. The Tigers (2-2) defeated the Tornados 7-2 winning all but one match in both singles and doubles.
 
Juniors Rob Chang (Aeia, Hawaii / 'lolani School) and Dalton Locke (Humble, Texas / Kingwood) finished first in the doubles competition with an 8-4 win from the second line. The Tigers took a 2-1 advantage into singles after an 8-6 tiebreaker win from senior Hao Nguyen (Sugar Land, Texas / Strake Jesuit) and sophomore Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep [FL]).
 
First-year Rafa Candelas Ruiz (Zacatecas, Mexico / American [ESP]) put up consecutive marks of 6-2 from the fourth line to kick off Trinity's singles matchups. Candelas Ruiz was followed by sophomore Connor Whittington (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) and his quick line three 6-2, 6-3 win.
 
Liao clenched the Tigers' victory from line two in a 6-2 third set win while Senior Cameron Goldstein (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) battled out another three-set match against the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's 19th ranked singles player, Joshua Bode, in line one. Goldstein fell to Bode after a 6-4 second set comeback to force a third.
 
Locke and senior Cal Hunter (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) added the final two points in straight sets from the fifth and sixth lines, respectively, to close out Trinity's 7-2 final score.
 
Up Next
No. 13 Trinity Men's Tennis will host their first SCAC matches of the season Saturday, facing off against Texas Lutheran University (10:00 a.m.) and the University of St. Thomas (2:00 p.m.).
 
The Tigers will spend the following three weeks away, then return Thursday, March 16 to host reigning NCAA III Champion, No. 1 University of Chicago.
