No. 16 Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Concordia for Sunday Split

Trinity hosted the Tornados and NCAA I Incarnate Word for marathon action at the Butch Newman Tennis Center on Super Bowl Sunday

SAN ANTONIO – No. 16 Trinity University Women's Tennis collected a dominant 9-0 victory over Concordia University (TX) Sunday morning at the Butch Newman Tennis Center, but fell 8-1 to NCAA I University of the Incarnate Word to end the day.

The Tigers (3-2) dove right in Sunday morning with a pair of 8-2 doubles victories between NCAA III's 25th-ranked sophomore duo of Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and the third-line pair of junior Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and sophomore Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame).

Junior Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and first-year Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy)—NCAA III's 16th-ranked unit—finished the doubles sweep, 8-5.

Seven singles sets ended in a favorable shutout for the Tigers Sunday including straight-sets shutouts from Hughes and sophomore Trinity Hatchett (Pearland, Texas / Dawson) in the fourth and fifth lines.

Hatchett managed to finish her match ahead of Levy's line-two matchup despite the eight-court facility being split with the men's team, allowing only the first four lines of singles to go first.

Levy, Cushing and junior Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia) each posted a 6-0 tally to their lines as well. Cummings's 6-2, 6-0 tally completed the shutout from line six.

Despite falling to UIW later in the afternoon, Levy added a bright spot from the match, preventing the shutout with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over her NCAA I adversary.

No. 16 Trinity Women's Tennis opens Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday as it hosts Texas Lutheran University (10:00 a.m.) and University of St. Thomas (2:00 p.m.).

The Tigers will remain in San Antonio for their next two matches after the SCAC-openers, hosting NCAA II Dallas Baptist University (Feb. 24) and reigning NCAA III runner-up No. 2 University of Chicago (March 15).
