SAN ANTONIO – The fifth-ranked Tiger baseball team resumes its season-opening home stand this weekend, hosting Hardin-Simmons University in a three-game series.
Trinity began its 2023 campaign against fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern College last weekend, with the Panthers taking two out of three from the Tigers. BSC blanked Trinity 3-0 in the opener, then survived a late rally to take a 7-6 extra-inning win in game two. The Tigers salvaged the weekend with a 6-2 win on Sunday to finish with a 1-2 record.
Ty Preston (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) and
Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) are leading the team in hitting, with
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) joining them in hitting over .400 so far this season. Lazzara drove in four runs with a pair of home runs over the weekend.
Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) got the win in Sunday's game by allowing just one run over seven innings, while
Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C. / Hough) pitched 4.2 shutout innings in relief during Saturday's 10-inning game.

Who's on Deck: Hardin-Simmons (Feb. 18-19)
Trinity and Hardin-Simmons will meet for a three-game series this weekend, beginning with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The teams have not played more than once in a single year since a three-game series in Abilene, Texas, during the 2018 season.
While Trinity began the year with a 1-2 record against Birmingham-Southern, Hardin-Simmons started off with losses to three West Region opponents: George Fox University, Concordia (TX) University, and Pacific Lutheran University. In addition to the Tigers, the Cowboys will also play Schreiner University, University of St. Thomas, and University of Dallas of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Trinity holds a 16-8 record in the series with Hardin-Simmons (since 1999), having won 11 consecutive meetings. The Tigers are 7-2 at home against the Cowboys – the most recent game being a 13-12 10-inning win by Trinity in 2019. Trinity's last home loss against HSU was a 2-1 game in 2011, though the teams have played just four times in San Antonio since then.
In the Hole: Babson (Feb. 24-26)
Trinity and Babson will meet up for a three-game series for the fifth time since 2017. The teams have split the 12 matchups with Babson winning the weekend series in both 2020 and 2022.
