No. 5 Tiger Baseball to Take on Babson in Three-Game Series

SAN ANTONIO – The fifth-ranked Tiger baseball team will open up a three-game series at home against Babson College this weekend.

Trinity has started the season with a 3-3 record that includes last weekend's series win against Hardin-Simmons University. The Tigers started off against fourth-ranked Birmingham-Southern College, winning the final game of that series to begin the year 1-2. Trinity split last weekend's series-opening doubleheader with Hardin-Simmons by scoring a walk-off win in 10 innings, then took the final game of the series on Sunday to even its record.

Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) leads the team with a .429 batting average this season, collecting nine hits and a team-leading five RBI. Michael Montrezza (Los Gatos, Calif. / Leigh) is also hitting over .400 this year and is second behind Lazzara with seven hits on the year.

Last weekend, Hunter Nevilles (Corpus Christi, Texas / Calallen) lifted Trinity to the win over Hardin-Simmons in the second game of the series with his two-run single in the 10th inning, while Khal Coney (Los Angeles, Calif. / Crossroads School) had his first career double and drove in three runs in two games of the series against the Cowboys. Kai Tinker (Simi Valley, Calif. / Grace Brethren) picked up a pair of hits, drove in two runs, and scored three more in Sunday's rubber game against HSU.

Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) has started the year with a 2-0 record and leads the team with 14 strikeouts. He recorded 10 punch outs in a six-inning outing on Sunday against Hardin-Simmons. Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / Alexander) has struck out 13 batters in his two starts, but has suffered two losses despite allowing just five runs over 15 innings. Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C. / Hough) has not allowed an earned run yet this year and has 10 strikeouts in nine innings over his two appearances.

NCAA III Poll: D3baseball.com
Trinity came into the season ranked fifth in the preseason poll released by D3baseball.com and the organization will publish its first regular season poll next week.

Who's on Deck: Babson (Feb. 24-26)
Trinity and Babson will meet for a three-game series for the fifth time in school history this weekend. The series between the two schools began in 2017 when the Tigers took the last two games of the weekend 3-2 and 12-11 to win the series. Trinity won the first and third games between the teams in 2019, then won again to start the 2020 matchups. Since then, Babson has won four out of the last five outings and has won the weekend series the last two meetings. The teams have split the 12 matchups right down the middle with seven of the 12 games being decided by two runs or less.

Babson will play its season openers this weekend at Trinity, just as the team did last season. The Beavers reached the NCAA III World Series for the first time in school history in 2019 and has made five appearances in the NCAA III Playoffs. Babson was picked to tie with Wheaton College (Mass.) for this year's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship, according to the preseason poll released this week. The Beavers return three All-Region players along nine starters and 26 total players from last year's team that went 24-15.

In the Hole: Concordia-Wisc. (March 3-5)
Trinity and Concordia University (Wisc.) will meet up for the first time on the diamond next weekend for another three-game series. The Tigers host the Falcons in the series opener on Friday, March 3, at 6:00 p.m., then the teams play again at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night. The series concludes with a Sunday game that begins at Noon.
