FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The 15th-ranked Tiger women's tennis rallied to score a 6-3 win on the road at No. 21 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity improved to 7-3 with the win, while Mary Washington fell to 3-5 after the defeat. The Tigers have also won four of their last five matches, with the only blemish coming in a 5-4 loss to top-ranked University of Chicago just three days ago.
First-year
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) picked up the clincher in the midst of five straight singles wins for Trinity, which had fallen behind 3-1 early to the Eagles.
The match began with the line three doubles team of junior
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and sophomore
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) notching an 8-3 win to give Trinity the early advantage, but UMW won the final two doubles matches to take the lead.
Junior
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and Levy were defeated 8-5 at line two, while sophomores
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) fell just short in an 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker loss at line one.
The momentum for Mary Washington carried into singles as Cushing lost in straight sets at line four singles to make it a 3-1 lead for the home team. Hughes won in straight sets at line five for Trinity's first singles win, which sparked a run of five straight Tiger victories.
Hill squared things up at 3-3 with her 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win at line one, then Trinity regained the lead as Kim won 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 at line two. Levy's clincher at line three was a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-1) victory, while junior
Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia) wrapped things up with her 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win at line six.
Trinity will continue its road trip with a neutral-site match against No. 22 Washington & Lee University that will be hosted by Mary Washington tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. (ET).
