Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The 15th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team finished off its weekend road trip with a 6-3 win against 22nd-ranked Washington & Lee University.
The Tigers improved to 8-3 this season, while Washington & Lee dropped to 6-4 with the loss. It was the first meeting between the two schools since 2017 and Trinity has now won two out of the last three matchups. Since 1995, Trinity has just five wins in 14 meetings with Washington & Lee, which now includes a 3-5 record during the regular season.
The match began with a marquee doubles matchup between two nationally-ranked doubles teams at line one. Sophomore standouts
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) are ranked 25th nationally in doubles and faced off against the 12th-ranked team of Lauren Long and Margaret Carlton. The Tiger duo got the first point of the match with an 8-1 victory.
That sparked a doubles sweep for Trinity as the 16th-ranked doubles team of first-year
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Texas / Weil Tennis Academy) and junior
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) were leading 5-3 when their opponents retired, then junior
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and sophomore
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) won 8-2 to finish off doubles action.
Washington & Lee opened up singles with a line one victory as Hill was defeated in straight sets to make it a 3-1 match. Despite that minor setback, the Tigers never really gave up momentum and quickly clinched the overall match win. Levy earned a straight-set win at line three to get things back on track, then Hughes clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win that put Trinity on top 5-1. Washington & Lee won the next two, but Cushing gritted out a tough 7-5, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-7) win to close things out.
