SAN ANTONIO – No. 15 Trinity University Women's Tennis bounced back for a 7-2 victory over No. 24 Colby College (ME), completing a Friday sweep of the visiting Mules as the Tiger men opened the afternoon with an 8-1 mark of their own.
The Tigers (9-4) got right to business with a sweep of doubles in reverse line order. Junior
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and sophomore
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame) raced out to an 8-1 mark in the third line, followed closely by the line-two mainstay of junior
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and first-year
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) at 8-2.
The doubles sweep was not without fight as sophomores
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) and
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) had the venue's full attention for some time before reaching its 8-4 finish.
The Mules (3-5) rallied their momentum from the fight put up in line-one doubles as the first point of singles action went to Colby, answered quickly with three straight decisions across the lineup for the Tigers—coincidentally all the odd-numbered matches.
Hughes set the table for a Hill clinch as the junior finished the fifth line, 6-2, 6-3, just ahead of the sophomore's pair of 6-4s to put the tally at 5-1. Levy came moments later finishing off her third-line matchup, 6-2, 6-2.
Trinity's final point came from junior
Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia) at 6-4, 6-3 in the sixth line, ahead of Cushing's superbreaker finish.
No. 15 Trinity Women's Tennis returns for a home double-dose next Sunday, April 2 as it hosts its third Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup—Austin College, 10:00 a.m.—and potentially its sixth matchup of nationally ranked teams—University of Texas-Dallas, 3:00 p.m.
